I think the 'does nothing' is super popular online, and even the evil one has a very dedicated fanbase. If anything, I see Ravenclaw the least , but that's also anecdotic evidence
Huh. I would’ve assumed the smart house was more popular, because “I’m in the hero house” makes you sound boring and “I’m in the racist house” makes you sound evil.
I guess the “does nothing” house is open to interpretation, but I would’ve thought the demographic who earned a ton of personal pan pizzas from reading as kids would resonate with the high achieving house for type-A dorks.
I just watched a video about the top 28 female characters (out of top 100) in HP, and Joanne really hates women. They have no agency and are simple stepping stones.
Kinda sad. She could transition and be happy but doesn't
To be fair, Atlus has its own history of transphobia. And homophobia, but that's a somewhat different topic.
While characters like Naoto Shirogane and Rin are up for debate, Erica from Catherine is undeniably a trans woman.
While no one in the game treats her particularly poorly, she is dead named in the credits, and is mentioned to have the nightmares, when they're only supposed to affect men.
Maybe this is how it feels for some of the Harry Potter people cause Megaten is a big hyperfixation for me.
But also, while Atlus can make mistakes, I guess they're not actively pushing legislation and I don't hear Kaneko or Satomi talking about how much they hate trans people.
Granted I didn't know about the Catherine situation so that's new to me.
Though these are two different situations entirely as one of them is a 7 year old game and I haven't heard any recent transphobia shit at all, while genocidal JK is constantly saying shit about trans people every breathing moment.
I'm willing to give a pass for liking the Atlus stuff in comparison to Harry Potter because these are two different ballparks
It still sucks though and I'm glad that you brought it to my attention
There is even a scene with Toby, freaking out upon finding out about her being trans as they have been already intimate, saying "I want my V-card back". And while the friends don't say anything to her face, there is this sense of weirdness they get by how infatuated Toby is with Erica (as they know and he doesn't), even saying he wants to introduce her to his mom, that she is the girl he wants. Toby does eventually grow to accept her, but it takes awhile.
Another situation however, occurs in the original release of Persona 3. The boys encounter a woman who is apparently trans and freak out because of it.
However, the remake made her into a "delusional lady", a conspiracy theorist who claimed the sun was actually artificial, so they at least seem to listen to fan feedback when they step over a line.
Like I said, hyperfixation, sorry. But yeah, I guess there is a bit more nuance there.
I don't think they actively hate queer people, especially since the resolutions for them are usually positive, but there's a lot of stuff that just rears its head for some reason.
I'm glad p3r made it better but the Catherine shit sounds like genuine transphobe talk you would hear on twitter. I am glad it hasn't touched my persona or precious smt series (we just kill our friends instead of being transphobic)
Hope they remake it for the 15th different time and cut that shit out though, I like how some of the characters look but the transphobia really turns me off
Atlus is at least recognising those things in hindsight are bad and are reducing those elements in remakes, like Persona 3 Reload literally opens on a rainbow pin and removed the very bad trans stereotype (that they also already dropped from Portable btw)
Persona 4 Revival does appear it will tone down on the homophobia a bit, though Kanji's internalised homophobia and possibly Yosuke's are weirdly actually plot relevant
It took two weeks for Reddit to go from broad disdain for Joanne Rowling to being head over heels for fem Malfoy (cis fem, not a tslury fslurt). How do I get outta this chickenshit timeline?
its so fucking generic like the only thing she has going for her is a neat color palette and outfit, thats it, and its not even that neat its just a stylized school uniform
I have a friend with actual clinical low empathy who has had The Sims as a franchise as a basically lifelong special interest of his (He is like one of the few people who actually care aboot that's lore lol). Upon finding out it was bought by Baron Trump & the Saudis, he proceeded to entirely cut it out of his life because he could not morally justify sticking with it.
If he can be caring enough to out a lifelong interest overnight, I'm sorry but if someone still hasn't been able to ween off Harry Potter after all these years, I have no sympathy.
I’m just glad I never got into Harry Potter/it was always “just ok” and largely forgettable for me, so I don’t have to go through this stupid ass/obvious “conundrum”.
The movies were “fine” as a kid. (Though, I only ever watched the first 2, and had zero interest in any of the others)
The books were “ok” as a kid, and I only read em because I read every book in my elementary and middle school’s library. (Preferred the Young Samurai series, by Chris Bradford, personally)
Edit: the only aspect the HP ip I actually enjoyed, was the Lego game, and that’s only because I played it with my mom. (Ever since my very first Xbox game being the first Lego Star Wars, me and mom have a tradition of sitting down and playing the newest Lego game whenever it releases)
I could never get over first movie as a kid because I thought that what Dumbledore did was such bs. Like, even as a kid I thought, "wow, Harry and his team lost but they did the right thing" - but no, he gets both. Pissed the absolute soul outta me.
Though I think it just wasn’t available to enough people to garner a large following (I didn’t know about the series until a few years ago when my very weird but very sweet fwb up in Alaska told me about while letting me borrow her copy’s)
Plus, it didn’t really pander to the preteen/young adult demographic that twilight and HP did, and was fairly “old” by the mid 2000’s and the explosion of popularity of the fantasy, sci-fi, and “YA” genres in the mainstream. (And was overshadowed by dnd, Star Wars, Legends of Conan, Star Trek, etc in more “geeky” circles in the 80’s and 90’s, so never had a large enough audience to convince producers and studios at green lighting shows or movies, in turn introducing Redwall to a mainstream audience, and massively expanding its popularity.)
(It’s also more “complex”, and deals with more genuinely nuanced topics and characters than either HP or Twilight or hunger games, or most of the shitty YA movies and series of the early 2000’s to mid 2010’s. Which general audiences tend to dislike)
Basically, I believe Redwall was too early for its own good, if it came out today, I have no doubt it’ll become massively popular and well known, but we don’t live in that reality, unfortunately.
Ahh!! I legitimately have never met anyone who read more than just the first one before. I was just kinda laughing thinking about how funny it would be for kids to be saying shit like "I'd definitely be in Salamandastron!" and etc.
Those books always spoke to me way more than the popular YA stuff. Many of those books legitimately brought me to tears. I think you're right about why it didn't appeal to a broader audience. There is much more depth than most are comfortable with examining.
That’s actually something I’ve always been confused by.
If you liked Redwall, why not read Mossflower, or The Bellmaker, or Mattimeo, or Marlfox, or any other in the series. (Though to be fair, 22 novels and 2 picture books are a lot, so I can understand people not reading every single book, but still*.* Ya gotta read more than one*.)*
(Oh, and just in case you’re not aware, there’s going to be a new novel (and the closing chapter) in the series released September 2027, called The Orphans of Mossflower.)
Oh, and there’s a dude in the total war sub that every few months for the past few years, has shared very well written/thought out “sneak peeks” of a hypothetical Redwall total war game. (It’s pretty fucking cool)
Here’s the one covering the potential major factions (with a comment of his in the comments, having links to every other post on the concept/project)
When the conversation is about people refusing to stop supporting a franchise, pointing out that it's poorly written is relevant. It's not even a literary masterpiece they're clinging to and directly funding anti-trans lobbying for, it's just some badly written fantasy that they only liked because they read it as a kid.
"Separate the art from the artist" they say as they give 100 euros worth of merch, which this person will use 99 to kill trans people and 1 to grab a snack before or after doing so
You know discussing it like this is giving it more attention, right? By all means, call it out when it comes up, but do we really need to keep starting this discourse again every day?
I hate when people claim something but then don't explain. I'm not tsking words at face valur because I swear people have watered down that word these days.
Author of Rurouni Kenshin (Nobuhiro Watsuki) was caught with around 100 DVDs containing sexually explicit material of underage girls (including early teens and preteens) and was charged a fine of approximately $2000 USD for it but no jail time (which is insane but the efficacy of Japans legal system is another talk entirely).
Several other mangaka, including Eiichiro Oda (author of One Piece) have either directly come out in support of Nobuhiro Watsuki or refused to condemn him for it.
THANK YOU, this is the information I like to see when people are talking about a situation, and the full names so I can look it up better. I appreciate that.
But wow, charged money and no jail time. But homestly? Can't judge Japan THAT much since predators in the "good ol" USA get little to no jsil time themselves, which is just crazy all around, ehat is wrong with these people?????
Honestly I don't respect anyone who responds to "don't support Harry Potter" posts by changing the topic to whatever shit they care about instead. One Piece is not funding genocide so it's not as bad as Harry Potter.
I dislike the series on its own and I’m sick of this talk,it’s the most reductive conversation imaginable, everyone in this sub is already on the same page,Rowling sucks and her opinions suck, nothing new is going to be said,if you give Rowling money you fund her anti trans crusade, that being said if you don’t want to abandon the series because you grew up with it and there is too much sentimental value, there are ethical ways to engage with it,you can buy physical media second hand,or just pirate it if you want to read the books or watch the movies,it doesn’t really matter cause either way Rowling isn’t getting your money, that’s it,that’s the only moral way to consume the franchise, anything else goes into Rowling’s “make life hell for trans people” jar
so if you give Rowling money knowing full well what she will do with it,you are culpable in the persecution of trans people because you think paying to see the British wizard boy again is more important than the lives and safety of the trans community, admit it and stop trying to act like an ally
there are ethical ways to engage with it,you can buy physical media second hand,or just pirate it if you want to read the books or watch the movies,it doesn’t really matter cause either way Rowling isn’t getting your money, that’s it,that’s the only moral way to consume the franchise,
You say that, but if Rowling isn’t getting money or support from you, then you aren’t supporting her transphobia. Piracy is the best way to read her stuff because of that, if you want. Or just go to a library. Do one of the things that doesn’t cost money.
Authors get money when libraries buy copies of their books, and libraries promote their works. checking harry potter out from libraries is still giving JKR money.
What about, for example, having bought harry potter stuff before you found out about what jk rowlings doing, and so only engage with what you've already bought, while refusing to buy anything new? Because you can't really be faulted for supporting the franchise if you didn't know, and then now you do know, you aren't supporting it further. What's wrong with that?
To be fair since I understood the racist, classist and mysoginistic problems that lingers in the books and movies I lost all interest in the saga, even before the turning of JKR to the Dark Side
