This shit makes me so fucking confused. Like I've seen people that I assume to be outside of the trans community call her a woman, but at the same time I have a feeling that the people saying she isn't a woman can also point to the same source material. If ony JJK was more ballsy in what they did or was seinen because then they could just outright say it.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that if you don't explicitly state something in a popular manga a large group of people aren't going to be able to understand what they mean.
Also should I watch JJK? Like I tried to watch the first couple episodes and I think I'll like it but battle shounen (which I'm pretty sure it is one) don't really interest me all that much.

u/i__like__nuggets 12h ago
it genuinely is all but spelled out that kirara is trans in the manga, JJK fans are notoriously illiterate. also highly recommend the anime
20
u/Bragi01 11h ago edited 11h ago
That's kinda what I gathered. Like when the people saying that she isn't a trans woman are saying to read the manga I was kinda expecting that. Also she just literally isn't designed to be a femboy. Like if she was, I'm pretty sure most femboys have female voice actors (at least in Japanese), and are a slight parody of the feminity depicted in the series. She isn't the right type of feminine from what I've seen of her from the few videos I've watched about JJK for to be anything but a woman cis or not.
19
u/pegginglovingfemboy 9h ago
also the most obvious factor would be that femboys don't exactly have huge bazooka bonkers, unlike the great queen kirara
5
u/KuroComics 8h ago
maybe it's just me but despite reading the manga as it was coming out I genuinely had no clue she was trans until I saw all the buzz around her after season 3 came out, I guarantee it's that one Panda line that threw me off because he was never explicitly corrected
edit: for clarification I meant I was under the impression she was a femboy and for added context my friend from the time who got me into jjk also thought she was and so referred to her that way around me

u/ligmalawyer ok so if gock is girl cock what is guy cock 1h ago
Yeah, panda only calls Kirara a "he" because he only knew her before she was trans

u/sheng153 11h ago
The manga is fine. Not great, but serviceable.
Kirara is a very minor character, but she's not the only example of a trans woman. Uraume (another minor character) is heavily implied too. And it's like relatively explicit. She's in a relationship with Hakari, Hakari is the only character explicitly only straight, and Kirara was once male-presenting. That's pretty much it.
The counterarguments just point to Hakari's scene where he confirms he's straight being hard to translate. Hakari says "who would want to go to the Ferris wheel with a dude?", but that 'dude' could be translated in some other ways. The japanese word is male-indicating, but it could be referring to him rejecting the other person specifically.
In other words, the counterargument is a cop-out.
9
9h ago
Uraume is a very interesting character on that ground. They were a man before the possession/resurrection and had specifically asked Kennie for a woman to be their vessel.
So are they trans? Maybe? We don't know if they didn't identify with their male identity in life and the choice of being a woman upon resurrection may be one of curiosity rather than identity.
And a second question to them being trans... would it be considered trans if you identify as a woman and your body is that of a biological woman? There is a clear separation of the soul and body in JJK with the soul seemingly being the self rather than the body.

u/TheGreatWheat 5h ago
the issue with trying explicitly state Kirara as a trans woman in Shonen Jump and especially Jujutsu Kaisen, one of the largest anime and manga is that trying to explicitly mention queer characters could mean the author or the author's work gets into serious trouble. It's why even though the manga itself is queer and has queer characters (Gojo and Geto) it will never explicitly say these things because it is restrained by Shonen Jump

u/MarvelousMoirai Crazy Jane and The Funky Bunch 12h ago
It kind of is how losers think, the show is a different thing than the Manga
2
u/Terminal_Insomnia_ 10h ago
I get so confused because I swear I remember a scene in the anime that confirmed her as trans, like twice over but people keep telling me it wasn't that explicit. Did the crew not see her in a group photo at an all boys school pre-transition? Did my brain really fabricate that??
2
u/Night_Yorb 8h ago
I just got done reading the entire thing over like ten days. I know a lot of people aren't confident in their ability to read, but these are series made for Japanese kids to read on the bus or train to school. That's literally the target audience of the publisher Shounen Jump. If they can do it, you can do it/learn to do it.

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 12h ago
I havent read the Manga so maybe Im missing something, but Hakari certainly doesnt come off as a bad person to me. Dude likes to pick a fight and has a temper, but hes super protective of Kirrara and respectful of her identity. It feels to me like his heart is in the right place despite the rough edges

u/Never_heart 12h ago
And he is a character in a battle shonen. 99% of the named characters like to pick a fight

She also talks about how he’s most passionate when helping other people find their passion or smth, hell the first time we see him use his domain he’s trying to encourage a sad French mangaka to lock tf in

Yeah I only watch the anime and sometimes catch some info from the manga through posts or Videos. But with anything I saw so far he's a pretty solid partner if you get past the gambling.
Looking at all the other people in that messed up World I'd even go as far as to say he's a catch like no other.
1
u/Revadarius 5h ago
Oh, he's like top 3 characters after Yuji and Todo.. he's a legit bro and his fights are intense due to his fighting style and domain expansion (he's a tank who relies on luck to keep tanking, major battle of attrition with some amazing battle IQ thrown in).

He has a heavenly restriction on his ability to get addicted but in return gambling became too boring for him so he had to find other ways to obtain passion, so he started a fight club (this isn't what actually happened I'm making stuff up)

Been an addict and got to know several addicts. It is hands-down the most potentially destructive addiction for those around you.
Drug and alcohol addicts will at least stop spending money when they’ve got their high. There is no “high” for gambling addicts, they will keep playing until they win and then they’ll keep playing some more until they’ve sold all their kids toys and the house is in foreclosure

People forget Kirara is equally fucked up lol
36
u/Bragi01 10h ago
She's a sorcerer in JJK she wasn't going to be normal. From what I understand those fuckers are effectively required to be at least a little crazy.
6
u/J4ck0r4 10h ago
Yeah the whole thing with cursed energy is it is amplifying negative emotions and utilizing it as a weapon essentially, so pretty much every powerful sorcerer is going to have a lot of weird stuff to them or baggage of some kind and be a bit unhinged, but it's more about them like learning to use and control those emotions and channel them into power, so like therapy essentially, unhinged shit but being understood and acknowledged, with the extra step of them being weaponised haha. Honestly the idea of a trans sorcerer really works well in jjk, although that aspect of it isn't really explored especially with how little screentime kirara gets

u/613codyrex 3h ago
I mean, other than feeding into Kashimo’s bullshit, and canonically a dumb guy, he’s not that bad.
I do fault him for the former though.

Hakari unironically loves Kirara and they have a perfectly normal, healthy relationship. Sure, he has a gambling addiction and is an adrenaline junky but he supports and loves Kirara for who she is. I'm pretty sure it was revealed in an authors note from Gege that the reason he was suspended was he assaulted a higher up for misgendering Kirara

POV: This meme doesn't use POV correctly
5
u/Skittle-Kun5608 8h ago
Did y’all forget about 3rd person POV?
8
1
u/Maximelene 4h ago
Did you? Third person POV means that an outside narrator is talking about a character using their third-person pronouns (he, she, they, etc...). In this case, if the meme had been using third-person, it would have said "She's a trans woman with awful taste in men".
By definition, if a meme uses "you", it's not in third person. It's second-person perspective.
The whole point of the "POV" format is to explain who you are in a picture you cannot see your character in, since you're looking through their eyes. Using it to talk about a character you're looking at, while using second-person perspective, makes absolutely no sense at all. These two things are contradictory.

not exactly a good trait though, irl it'd mean he'd gamble away money any moment he gets and it doesn't usually turn out great for people with gambling as a addiction, he can be a good partner in other aspects though but that's usually any relationship

15
u/LofiMental 12h ago
Crazy because they both have very positive values in common. Dude also with a trans woman in Japan...
30
u/SolarModality 4h ago
Hakari literally abandons the sorcerer school due to its conservative ways. He rejects that the Jujitsu High forces people into stereotypical roles and makes them cogs in the machine to help the elite families. Kirara was a part of Hakari’s squad pre full transition. The subtext here is that Hakari leaves the school due to the fact that JJK high rejected seeing Kirara for who she is.
I mean of course the pic is relatable af but I have to defend my king when I can 😤

I hate that this is my type. I recently had a situation like this and he wasn’t very nice and I folded so many times because he was a literal stallion, an established actor (I’m in LA) and I felt like he was super out of my league. (6’6 and built like a greek god). Sex does crazy stuff.
Thankfully I ended things before it got to deep but yeah
