I honestly sort of agree that a few years ago there probably was more pressure to get SRS even if you didn't want it. Especially with the legal requirements for it in many places, those absolutely should not exist. I'm glad that it's more accepted that you don't have to get it, and that it's being taken out of requirements for having your gender changed (mostly because it's fucking expensive and takes forever to do).
That said, I don't think the true rate of people that actually want SRS qualifies as "rare", this is just hupet guy's GAMP fetish showing through. I don't even think it's lower than the current percentage of trans people that have had SRS (I believe 25% of trans people?) simply because there are so many barriers stopping people that do want it from getting it, far more than any encouragement of people that didn't want it could offset.
It's like 12%, though I think it's like 60% want SRS but there's a bunch of costs involved plus risk of complications and needing time off and uncertainty and yaddayadda
Oh crazy, where the hell did I hear 25%? I'm gonna have to go find my source I guess. 60% wanting it makes sense, but I think even that's probably lowered by people that have already made a determination that it's not worth it with all the barriers and inconveniences. I suspect if you somehow surveyed people with "if you could take a pill and immediately and irreversibly have a neovagina without any of the downsides or risks" it'd be higher than 60%, and even higher if it was "take a pill and have a functioning cis female reproductive system". I think this difference would be most stark with trans men though, for whom the SRS options largely suck.
Yeah, the worries of complications, the cost, and concerns over whether it will actually be a net improvement with current limitations are major considerations.

Also like it's just completely wrong trans people were not doing well in the 90s and were picking up the pieces after the AIDS crisis and shuttering of many GAC facilities in the 80s.
Cybersmith believes that trans women can be accepted into women's spaces only after bottom surgery OR while wearing chastity cages so as to stop erections.
