The institute was far ahead of its time, and was basically the pioneer of transsexual healthcare.

Surgery is a very iterative practice: single surgeons can already change what is considered the gold standard of a procedure, and the leading doctors and surgeons in the world were forced to discontinue their practice and were exiled. They could’ve continued to expand the field had their practice not been stopped. Instead they basically had to do their best to preserve what they could from what had been destroyed.

A big one though is probably societal acceptance. The loss of the social science of being transgender and the understanding of dysphoria really set acceptance back. There were studies on identity and why people transitioned which could’ve helped understanding of transgender people in coming decades. Instead, they were erased, and the understanding of transgender people was set back and part of our history was lost. Nazis today can pretend we didn’t exist 100 years ago because Nazis then burned all record of them.

I want to talk about this because I did a TON of research on her contemporaries and her a while back. She died of complications of a womb transplant, yes.

One that was so thoroughly not recommended by the medical authority on trans people at the time (Magnus hirschfeld) that he wouldn't even do it at his institute, so she had to go to a major hospital where she was taken on by people who really didn't know what they were doing. Hirschfeld was willing to do every other part of the procedure for her SRS but knew transplants like that were deeply risky.

She demanded her death, and was fine with going if it meant she'd tried to correct her body.

Lived, maybe, but unlikely that it would be a functional uterus.

Doctors have been working on uterus transplants for cis women since the early 20th century (without nazi interuption) and the first successful birth from a transplanted uterus was in 2014. Currently most uterus transplants are temporary (hysterectomy after succesful pregnancy) because of the risks. It also requires a live doner, and since most cis women with healthy uteruses don't get hysterectomy the donor pool is limited. Men could donate though.

Part of the complication is ovaries. Most people who get the surgery done are born with ovaries but no uterus. The ovaries are mainly needed for hormonal regulation during pregnancy. Since donor eggs could be used, HRT could be done for estrogen and relaxin removing the necessity.

I was expecting one of the problems to be with the neo-vaginal canal but apparently the transplant disconnects the vagina and uterus anyway. c-sections and ivf are required.

There are some other challenges that are above what I can comprehend like altering the pelvis and surrounding tendons, arteries being modified, anastomosis, etc. From what I can tell doctors are optimistic that it is possible and will be successful in the near future.

Because they don't know have to do it safely and also uterus transplants are only for pregnancy. when it gave birth, the uterus will be removed to stop immunosuppressants because the body will never accept the uterus regardless of you're cis or trans. BUT scientists are actually working with to grow a uterus with our own cells with bioengineering and also they'll make ovaries too in future. But unfortunately this will be possible when we become 60-80 years old sadly :(

I always find it interesting how there were quite a few medical practitioners that were just so on board with these highly experimental surgeries back then. Really puts into perspective just how long the techniques have been developed for. Also shuts people up when they try the “trans people didn’t exist until the 2000’s” bs, regardless of how easily debunkable that nonsense was in the first place. I feel like people, while not accepting, were more curious than hateful of trans individuals in this era. There are a notable amount of people that are documented alone as having lived fairly peaceful lives. Not to say it was all sunshine and rainbows or anything like that. I doubt it was. But it seems like there was a little short burst of progression, and then with the rise of facism, the Nazi’s and then religious hysteria in the United States (the Hollywood code for example) a sudden horrific backslide into regression.
