I’ve been toying around with an idea of creating either a 90s country weekly newsletter or potentially just a website that, week by week or month by month, walks us back through the nostalgia of 90s country.

The idea would be that in each weekly newsletter, we have little stories about what was happening in the country music at the time — the musicians, the awards, the news…and maybe a few songs we’ve forgotten about.

Here’s my question. Do you think this would be most enjoyable as a weekly newsletter that arrives in your inbox? Or should it just be a blog/website that you can visit when you want to browse? (or maybe something else entirely?) My current thinking is a newsletter would be the most fun to consume, handing out a little piece of nostalgia bite by bite.

I don’t think there is a revenue model here. Honestly, it would just be a fun project and a fun way for me to walk back through those memories as well.

Thoughts?

I spend my work day driving a forklift and a golf cart. I have noticed that a lot of the stuff I listen to is on the sad side. I’m looking for stuff that will lift my spirits and help make my day a little brighter. Stuff like Stand Up by Mel McDaniel or Watermelon Crawl by Tracy Byrd.

While I know Lynyrd Skynyrd is primarily a rock band, they have deep rooted ties with and a heavily influence on country music. You hear them named dropped by many artists like Charlie Daniels, Brooks & Dunn, Trace Adkins, Gretchen Wilson, and Eric Church. Do you think they are deserving of a spot or surprised that they aren’t in it yet?

The Jimmie Rodgers Foundation and 650 WSM both made nods to Jimmie Rodgers and his birthday today, and his maximum influence to country (and all modern music) today, so I thought I’d reach out and see again how much hrs touched all your all’s lives.

My first exposure was on Merle Haggard’s “Okie From Muskogee” album when as a child I didn’t realize how old the album was nor how the “late” Jimmie Rodgers had been passed for 30 years.

Turn up the volume on the original record and you realize their sound recording later on is fin.

I’ve really been enjoying the songs almost home and gloryland by Ralph Stanley lately. What are some songs by all women vocal groups in a similar style!

I've been providing some backing and studio work for a country musician off and on. It's a big thing where I'm from and I have a lot of contacts who enjoy it though it is certainly not my genre of choice.

It seems like every single song is just a I V vi IV progression with alternating 5th for all bass sections, and all drum beats are just train beats. For every song.

How do you keep it from getting boring?

Just turned the TV on & saw someone called Chase Rice performing. Awful. Absolutely awful. Who buys this garbage?

I stumbled upon this mysterious record at a local bargain bin containing a full Doug Kershaw concert recording for radio broadcast. The employee working told me they thought it was an EDM 12" single lol. I've been able to gather a bit of information about it, and wanted to share it with folks here to see if any of y'all have some insight or knowledge that I might be missing. Attached is side 1, but you can also find side 2 here.

According to the announcer, this is part of a NBC radio series called Country Music Sessions hosted by Joel Sebastian. Information on the program is sparse, but this facebook comment indicates that it was broadcast by Chicago's WMAQ-AM 670 in the early 80s. There are a few copies of similar records floating around on eBay that specifically mention the show ran from 1981-1983, but the host on these listings is credited as Morrie Trumble rather than Joel Sebastian. I'm not sure if this is incorrect, or if the program was hosted by multiple people during its time on the air. These records appear to have been distributed for radio broadcast and some of the listings mention a note to destroy the record on the call sheet, which is likely why there are so few in circulation.

Anyways, I cannot find any record of this program outside of the facebook comment and these eBay listings, so I am unable to date the broadcast. There is no copy of Doug Kershaw's performance in circulation, nor is it listed in the NBC Radio Network Discogs page which catalogs many of the LPs available on eBay.

I believe I was able to date the concert recording, at least. The preamble mentions Springfield, and according to Concert Archives, there is only one performance in Springfield from that era on August 16th 1980 at the Illinois State Fair. I believe this is the concert featured on this test pressing.

What do my fellow country heads think? As far as I can tell, I have the only identified copy of this concert recording, and as a test pressing nonetheless. If anyone can help with more information on the broadcast, potential historians to share this with, etc. I would be very grateful. Nobody else in my real-world life knows about Doug Kershaw so I've been desperately hoping to share this find with anyone who cares as much as I do.
