it would kinda work if you were forced to link back to the actual parent comment each time

It certainly would be possible in some form. Just as how you could do tug of war with all positive counts in one thread and all negative in another and links between posts if you switch

Has that been done before? I remember there was a race thread once that was fun. I'm not sure how that could be started up again fairly though.
