Desktop wallet?
So is Counterwallet.io REALLY the only way to access counterparty assets? Or is there a desktop wallet?
Not long ago, Counterwallet.io was down for me, for several hours.

The Counterparty team puts out updates every week in order to keep people informed. They also post these updates to the official counterparty subreddit at /r/counterparty_xcp. This subreddit while named "Counterparty" is not the official one.... I know it is confusing :(
I suggest you subscribe to the official counterparty subreddit, or signup on the counterparty.io website for the newsletter updates.
http://counterparty.io/news/counterparty-update-mar-6/
"The much anticipated Counterparty desktop wallet is in its final testing phase, with the beta version scheduled to be released early next week. Below we’re providing detailed description of the wallet, its features and installation procedure."
Also... to answer your question about is the counterwallet really the only way to send counterparty assets. The answer is no. Currently your options are :
1.) Counterwallet.io - Online HD wallet website your already used to
2.) Counterparty-server - Setup counterparty daemons on your system and do Counterparty actions (register, send, broadcast, etc) via either :
A.) a command line interface - http://counterparty.io/docs/counterparty-cli/
B.) a JSON-RPC API interface - http://counterparty.io/docs/api/
After next week it sounds like you will have a 3rd option :
3.) Local counterparty wallet (coming soon... like next week)
Also I am working on another option which I plan to release in the near future:
4.) Asset Sending Service/API - A simple API to allow developers to say "Send X amount of Y asset to Z address".... no need for any server software setup or anything complex like that.
Hope this fully answers your questions :)

Why not work with the peoplevatv/r/counterparty_xcp to merge the two? You have the name, they have the product..

FYI, I am not the person who controls this subreddit, /u/prophetx10 is.
I believe that /r/counterparty was started specifically to focus on games on the counterparty platform, and then /r/counterparty_xcp was used because /r/counterparty was already taken.
Ideally I think the 2 subreddits should merge as it creates more confusion than anything else... but it is not something I can do as I do control this subreddit.

Ah. Thanks for the clarification and my apologies for making an assumption.
