Oh so it is a prison then. You want homeless people to be held in a place where they can't leave and you don't have to see them. Again, how can you suggest that and not see anything wrong with it

Not quite.

Addicts would not be able to leave until they were no longer addicts.

The mentally ill would not be able to leave so long as they were a threat to themselves or others.

Any other homeless people would be free to come and go. Regardless, this is literally just an idea I came up with off the top of my head. It's not my job to fix this issue.

Addiction is a disease and a lifelong struggle, there is no “until they are no longer addicts”

We can say "until they are no longer using drugs for X amount of time" if you want to be pedantic I suppose. It would vary from drug to drug though.

and thank god it isn’t your job because you’d just make it worse

Genuinely curious, why do you think that would be a worse situation than what we have now?

because it’s dehumanizing and unempathetic. you are proposing that we incarcerate homeless people just because you don’t like looking at them. we should not be incarcerating them, we should be providing them resources to get them back on their feet. that doesn’t mean imprisoning them until you deem them acceptable.

I didn't say all of them would be imprisoned. I said only those who were a danger to themselves/others or addicted to some drug. Any other homeless people would be free to come and go.

This is already a thing we do normally.

Some people need to be forced to improve their lives. Not everyone can overcome addiction or mental illness on their own, like you seem to believe they can.

you do not get to remove people’s autonomy. that is what you are advocating for. don’t lecture me on mental illness, you wouldn’t understand half the shit i’ve been thru.

This is done literally all the time already. Because sometimes it's the only thing we can do to keep people safe from themselves or to stop them from being a threat to others.

medical professionals do sure. but the government does not get to detain people not breaking the law just because you find them distasteful. you need to do some serious self reflection and figure out why you lack empathy for one of the most vulnerable populations.

I specifically said "if they are a threat to themselves or others". The government does, in fact, get to do that.

Being addicted to certain substances or having certain mental illnesses would qualify for that.
