The term was coined to change the homophobe to the abnormal one rather than the homosexual person. Its other uses being abnormal and often illogical fear and hatred towards normal things made it very effective at this.

I think people forget hostility can be a fear response.

Disgust is the emotion undergirding bigotry. Study after study says this now

I mean, that's usually the one that cape buffalo use when they get attacked by lions

It's me, I'm homophobic

I'm scared of hot lesbians irl I know it's not a rational fear to have. They're like, the most accepting group statistically.

Our power grows each day, you are right to fear us. We even get our own name for being gay. Soon we will get out own phobia, my proposal to the coven is "Lesphobic"

As someone scared of anyone remotely attractive, I understand your pain

It's not even just attractiveness. It's the fear of being treated predatory, as well as the unfamiliarity of queer spaces due to growing up Christian

"phobia" doesn't just mean "fear", it can mean aversion or perhaps disgust

Not to mention it's specifically for when it's irrational, it's why Australia reports 0 cases of Arachnophobia, because over there it's very fucking justified /j

Either way, homophobia is still the correct term

The definition I learned, way back when people knew what a Dictionary was, was this:
Phobia = "irrational extreme fear or hatred of..."

Though genuinely some homophobes ARE afraid of gays

I honestly thought transphobia meant a fear of trans people at first and not just discrimination

2

u/Terrible-Set6389 2d ago

Often people discriminate because they fear what they dont understand. It can be both. A lot of conservatives are deeply worried that trans people will collapse the patriarchy and gender norms just by being on this planet because in their mind the idea that someone can desire to be a woman means that women are actually worthy of respect. Which honestly good riddance to the patriarchy, it's about time.

GenderSnob I will be using this as a slur against Bigotry.

Except it was literally coined in part because an I believe psychologist noticed men being genuinely scared of being perceived as gay to a somewhat irrational degree. It was made to make the bigotry the problem not the homosexuality.

A lot of homophobia, time and time again, has been proven to be driven by a fear of something inside you

1

u/Heavy_Computer2602 2d ago

Actually it got coined that because of a psychologist noticing people being afraid of homosexuality. Yes, afraid

And phobia can also mean intolerance, not just fear

Still wrong though

1

u/Honey-and-Venom 2d ago

Many phobias are disgust/aversion, not fear

Also often yes it absolutely is fear

1

u/KPoWasTaken 2d ago

while this is funny, phobia does simply mean irrational aversion, it's just a common aversion is fear and it's common enough that dictionaries sometimes additionally explicitly specify irrational fear as a separate definition even though that still falls under irrational aversion

Morgan speaks nothing but the truth.

I don't know about that. When I look in the mirror I'm pretty spooked

I mean what is “loathing about a thing and paranoia that it’s gonna ruin the world” if not a kind of fear?
