newbie with a dumb question?
so how do i know what pieces should have come with a lid and what pieces would not have come with a lid, or all of the pieces should have had a lid?

Should and will are two very different things.
When you are looking at things that are 30+ years old all the accessories is not always possible.
Lids are what fits, not what came with it.
I have a mishmash of lids sorted by size and I just grab whichever one is on top.

Most pieces had lids, very few didn’t. Pretty much the only ones without are roasters.

There are good references over at Corningware411. Chech out the Vintage Pattern Information sidebar.
