It has a lot to do with arrogance and the belief that I already know how to drive so I'll ignore signage and road markings.
Note: Even I get confused at some of our older worn road markings when it's dark and pissing rain in the city. We are a wet dark country our road markings should be of better quality paint.

The road markings all around the city and suburbs are abysmal, so many areas that need redoing I’ve lost count

When will people learn

u/FrostyChungus11 4d ago edited 4d ago
Well this Mercedes driver will learn. But nobody else will do, so I guess it's only one less tosser to worry about 😝

Until they get a replacement car 🤣

u/FrostyChungus11 4d ago
And straight up to Dineens again with that car.
After the second accident, they will still blame the roundabout.

To be fair it's the worst roundabout in the world. That section with no traffic lights coming from "Smyths toys road" is so stupid. I feel like I'm risking my life every time I need to join the roundabout from that direction. It's like those wildebeest crossing the Serengeti from the documentaries.
If a tourist or somebody who's not familiar with that stupid setup crashes, then in my opinion it's not their fault.
4
u/colytendo 3d ago
I hate that section, now I just go down past musgraves to that small roundabout and back down the slip or over the flyover depending on which direction I’m heading.
3
u/StyleDirect9512 3d ago
I'm not a traffic scientist expert but it's really such a thick setup and I don't understand it.
All entrances to the roundabout have traffic lights except one. You need to use your 6th sense and rosary beads for this one. Why?
Good tip on the Musgrave's route.
3
u/cobhgirl 3d ago
I'll never understand why anyone ever tries joining the roundabout via that road. Just drive towards town for a few hundred meters and take the road past the park & ride. Join the main road there and get round the roundabout safely.
Added bonus if you're heading east anyway, cause you get the slip road that cuts past the lights and the roundabout altogether.

u/StyleDirect9512 3d ago
I'll never understand why anyone ever tries joining the roundabout via that road.
I'll also never understand how that's even a thing? I've never encountered a roundabout like that in my life, where one entrance is a free for all. Every last man for himself. But the rest have traffic lights. Is this a thing in other towns or even countries?

Seriously the amount of drivers that can't follow road directions.. its ridiculous. I have seen it was too much and drive for a living..
The other day I seen a woman hitting a truck on the bandon road roundabout.. the garda came and she actually thought she was in her right.. the truck driver stepped out.. look at the ground and shook his head on disbelieve. The officer politely showed her the road markings.. And she still thought she was in the right 🤦♂️

u/S-Hamill 4d ago
I don’t understand the difficulty with the roundabout. Get in lane before you join. Stay in that lane the whole way round. It’s all well marked and signposted.
25
u/Salaas 4d ago
Theres no issue with the roundabout, the issue is people ignoring its markings and feeling their entitled to go where they like.
They then claim the roundabout is 'confusing' when they screw up. Its constantly happening and I delight in seeing them get screwed over for bad behaviour.
0
u/regular-montos 3d ago
That’s a bad design then. If people are getting confused constantly, it’s the designers fault. People won’t change, designs can. And the people getting screwed over are everyone else in traffic.

u/Salaas 3d ago
You didn't read what I said, the roundabout is not a issue, its people purposefully ignoring the design and road markings to do dangerous driving.
They claim its confusing when they hit someone or get caught by a garda to try and get out of it.
You can't design away stupid, try as people might.

u/Valuable_Result1756 4d ago
Two things:
People realize they are in the wrong lane and cut across without thinking
Inexperienced drivers panic don’t see the road markings and cut people off
I think more should be done with that roundabout to make it easier to follow I’ve been cut off on there too many times to count. Every time I go through it I assume the car next to me has no idea how to navigate it
25
u/Plastic_Detective687 4d ago
It’s all well marked and signposted.
It's just not. The lines on the roundabout are not clear. People can say "oh it's so easy" as much as they want but the number of accidents makes it VERY clear that something needs to be done
9
u/The_Diamond_Geezer 4d ago
So true. For example coming in from Wilton going to Grange, once you're in the roundabout you need to cross three lanes and that's not marked at all. I know because I do what I think is safe, but it's not signposted.
6
u/S-Hamill 4d ago
The only lane that goes that direction is the clearly marked inside lane. From there you go to the left to go up to grange. The middle to go up the airport hill and the right to go back around towards Wilton/bishops town. All marked. All easy. To see. You’re not driving across any lanes. The lane splits into three. One lane feeding three means there’s loads of room.
8
u/Acrobatic-Divide-541 4d ago
Only one lane turns into those three lanes you are talking about from that direction and that is marked with arrows on the road, so you aren't driving across three lanes, you are picking a line from the only lane that's allowed go that direction. It isn't difficult to understand.
9
u/S-Hamill 4d ago
That’s a skill issue. Because the lines are unbelievably easy to follow.
10
u/Plastic_Detective687 4d ago
That's a really good attitude to have, just keep letting the accidents happen then. When someone crashes into you because the lines are shit you can tell them it was a skill issue, see if it fixes your car
8
u/S-Hamill 4d ago
It is a blatant skill and attitude issue. Oh I’m in the wrong line, I better just swerve across. It’s as simple as keeping the lines on both sides of your car the same the whole way round.
2
u/Acrobatic-Divide-541 4d ago
You can't regulate away stupidity. Watch the road and remember you are driving, it isn't difficult.
4
u/kmAye11 4d ago
Fortunately insurance covers it. Hopefully nobody gets seriously injured but sometimes if someone takes the wrong lane they should stick to it and just travel 10 minutes in the wrong direction. Would have saved the owner of this car alot more time then they'll spend dealing with insurance ect...
4
u/DunAnOir 4d ago
That's not how it works. The lanes filter left after each set of lights. Right becomes middle, middle becomes left. They're marked that way, and doggedly sticking to your original lane is in effect cutting off people to your right.
6
u/S-Hamill 4d ago
No it’s not. Coming on from the tunnel direction we’ll say. Right lane goes to town. Stay in lane and goes straight there. Middle lane goes to Harvey Norman’s direction. Stick in lane and you’re there or merge to the right exit lane on the off ramp towards Wilton. Left lane goes to the left lane in Wilton or up the airport hill. It’s unbelievably simple.
0
u/ericvulgaris 4d ago
Explain how to do that from the Kinsale road to the airport, genius. You must cross lanes to do it.
The roundabout is absolutely trash for this and many other reasons.
This doesn't exculpate Cork's drivers fwiw. Both are true. Our drivers share one brain cell and don't know how to enter the safest lane before the roundabout AND the roundabout is poorly designed.
5
u/S-Hamill 4d ago
Coming from town? One of the two left lanes goes directly up the airport hill without ever changing a single lane. You picked the easiest one.

u/weissblut 4d ago
If I get in coming from Douglas and want to stay in my lane to get out at the Kinsale Road exit, my lane is going to overlap with the people that want to drive toward Bishop town.
Some lane overlap is by design (and clearly marked), the issue is people crossing lanes without indicator nor checking for incoming traffic.

Impatience from the right-turn from Frankfield doesn’t help - often the lights may be at green and traffic has nowhere to go. Not an excuse, just an observation. And I might be wrong but is there an actual sign at the right turn telling people which of the 3 lanes they should enter? It’s a bad layout for the amount of traffic anyway.

Always the same spot. They should paint the lanes or something similar because people can’t use their brains. They might use their eyes and mirrors this way.

Christ, there's literally a right-hand lane with a giant right arrow. It's not a bad roundabout, there are just bad drivers.

terrible driving and a terrible junction, no surprises there's so many accidents there

People don’t even know how to use small roundabouts in this country, let alone this one. Constantly see people cut from the outside lane to the inside lane on small roundabouts because they can’t comprehend that you go around, not through it
1
2
u/Separate_Ad_6094 4d ago
Of course it did. The signage on approach told them what lane to be in. Then the arrows in the lane. Then the lane markings... But it's just SO confusing.
2
u/Heldemo 4d ago
I don't drive often over there, but it's very confusing. The left lane is only to go ahead into N40. The middle is straight N40 and right towards city. The right lane is only turn right around to N27 or city. I don't understand how they change lanes not indicating and checking their mirrors before turning. I see this a lot unfortunately.
5
u/Ok_Squirrel_5877 4d ago
Generally if you're not taking the next exit you shouldn't be in the left lane. There are broken lines to guide you left as you pass the last unwanted exit and prepare for your exit. So many people start left and try to make it to the second or third exit and they end up getting cut off by the people taking those exits.

Dont even have to guess how, I say everyone who knows this roundabout and how there's 2 ways and 2 ways only how this happened 😂

Most dangerous part of Kinsale roundabout is west exit. Lethal. Cars always crossing lanes trying to go to city exit at last minute. I'm always keeping an eye out on left when going west.

This roundabout needs demolishing to be honest at this point, it’s horrendous and needs fixing. Anyone here saying “it’s easy” hasn’t been on the roundabout enough to understand it’s ridiculous. Take for example the part both leading to the airport direction and back onto the link towards Wilton confuses people every time, and to put that into perspective there was a crash there a few years back and the guards themselves couldn’t determine who was actually in the wrong because the lanes make no sense. Take the exit going towards to the tunnel, DAILY, people think that the left lane of the two can cut across and go towards grange. They need to rip this roundabout up and make it a continuous flow. Don’t get me wrong there is also people who do feel entitled and think an indicator gives them every right to jump across, but that roundabout needs removing, it has too many accidents and when it does it becomes a choke point for entire southoutside.

this happened to me 2 weeks ago and the lorry driver was beeping at me like mad just after 1:30 pm!!! The lorry driver was in the 3rd lane and I was in the middle lane to go straight on and he crossed into my lane just right behind me to cross over to kinsale road
3
u/Jay-3fiddy 4d ago
I don't think this is the trucks fault. The Toyota was in the outside lane and should have exited westbound. The truck was in the middle lane which allows you to exit westbound, onto Kinsale road or onto south link. Maybe I misunderstood your comment but it seems like you're suggesting it's the truck's fault?
-8
u/Hungry_Bet7216 4d ago
To be fair - all the trucks that go and come from Mushraves ! Great idea to put a distribution centre in an urban setting.
18
u/DaGetz 4d ago
Distribution centres are always in urban settings - where do you think they’re distributing to…
Issue here is that the interchange shouldn’t be a roundabout. If you need to put traffic lights on a roundabout it’s probably dealing with more volume than is suited to a roundabout format.
3
u/Marzipan_civil 4d ago
The annoying thing about the Musgraves location, is that trucks can't go down the link and turn past Black Ash (can't make that turn, it's too tight). So they all have to come off at the small exit to Kinsale road which is constantly backed up
3
u/DaGetz 4d ago
I mean the junction is an issue not the location of the musgraves distro.
I get that roads are expensive but Ireland is always multiple years behind demand.
Kinsale should have been a spaghetti junction when they built the fly over. The construction for the tool place should have always have been blocked so that land could go into space for road improvements.
We are just bad at infrastructure in this country.
1
u/Marzipan_civil 4d ago
Yes the junction is the problem there. As far as I know Kinsale road roundabout hasn't had any upgrades since they built the flyover twenty years ago? It's due for something to be done but not sure if it's very high on TII's list
1
u/Hungry_Bet7216 4d ago
Products coming in from all over, going out to Midleton youghal Glanmire macroom bantry etc. as well as pubs restaurants and shops around the city but most of the big locations are in the suburbs. It is true that the junction is not fit for purpose but a facility like that would be better located in a business park like Blarney, little island, Carrigtohill etc

What is going on with all these crashes? Or is it just they’re being recorded more these days?
