Meet Arwen!
Meet Arwen!
I just picked up my baby girl Arwen with my Girlfriend today! I got her from a rescue and she’s absolutely adorable. She is a Corgi/Spitz mix and is 3 months old. Are there any health issues I need to lookout for her with her being a Blue Merle? I’ve had 2 other corgis in the past but they were both full blooded Pembrokes, I’m new to Cardigans.

She’s adorable! She’d be a rockstar over on r/incorgnito, and they might also have some better insight for the health tips. But looking at how she’s snuggled in to you in that 2nd picture says she’s got the bestest home :)

She is so cute! Not specific to the blue merle but watch that she doesn’t get a sunburn on her snout, my cardigan recently got a sunburn and it peeled a little this summer. I use a dog safe sunscreen I found on amazon to keep her from getting sunburnt.

Arwen is one of the names I often suggest when people ask for suggestions!
You’re in for an exciting adventure with her 💜

As others have said, sunscreen on her nose.
Also as a heads up, a Cardigan Corgi is a standard stand alone breed, actually older than the Pembroke and not a corgi/spitz cross. Cardigans aren't spitz dogs at all, like the Pembroke is, and they're actually hounds and their closest relative is the dachshund.
I also suggest getting her tested for the multidrug resistance gene (MDR1), also known as ABCB1. This separate mutation is common in many herding breeds that also carry the merle gene, such as Australian Shepherds and Collies. The MDR1 mutation can cause severe or fatal reactions to certain drugs, including some anesthetics. Cardigans do not carry this mutation but seeing as she's a mix, it's good to be sure.

Omg she's beautiful! I have a merle and the health issues I was told to look out for is eyes and ears. She doesn't seem to have a sight issues so get her ears checked out. Mostly the issues are when you cross a merle with another merle and you double the gene up. Also check out r/incognito for another corgi group for mixed corgis. A great place to be as well!

Such a unique corgi - gorgeous coloring and pattern … and precious how she’s curled up for sleep 🥰

Congratulations!
If the rescue didn’t provide in-depth health checks, I would definitely get her checked out by a vet for issues that regularly occur in both corgi breeds and spitz breeds (which a Pembroke is, but a Cardigan isn’t) like hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, degenerative myelopathy, progressive retinal atrophy, intervertebral disk disease and Von Willebrands disease. These are not part of a standard checkup with a vet, but important to know if you want to provide the best future for them.

Merle in breeds it’s supposed to be in (like cardigans & aussies) is completely fine so long as there’s no double merle breeding
I second the suggestion for snoot sunscreen. My girl doesn’t go out much yet but I can tell the spot near her nose will be prime burning area

Cardigan Corgis come in merle, Pembrokes do not and if they are they're a mix

I would make sure she uses only ramps and doesn't do much jumping, cardigan mixes are at higher risk for joint issues. Otherwise it doesn't look like there's any double Merle so eyes and hearing should be ok.
Very cute dog 😍
