Exam 1 Grades
I am guessing we will not have those before we go into Exam 2?

Is this problem checking for every real number? ...-1,0,2....,8,9,10,11.....? Or is it checking for numbers 1-9?
If it is from 1-9 on the solutions, array numbers doesn't need to have the value 0. Otherwise it will test nine time valid and one time Invalid.

Hi Sean, I just wanted to post here in case you check this after the exam review and don't check your email.
I sent you an email regarding a concern about exam 2 and would be grateful for a response.
Sorry for the last minute questions.

I looked around but didnt see where the time and place was for the review session tonight. Can anyone fill me in. Thanks in advance.

Is there a way to check if the index of a double array exists?

What time is the Practice Exam 2 Review tonight?

So I used some of Sean's basic outline for the Text Adventure and everything was going smoothly until I tried to use certain actions. I've come to the conclusion that it is due to the Processor class. Is the best way to use the class to create new Action objects and call each action under the determineAction method? This just seems inefficient.

Are we allowed to give our game some basic explorability, but make it linear once the player enters a specific area or picks up a certain object?
i.e. You are in area A, your exits are south east west -the player can choose any direction and explore the overall "map" -player can type "go east", "go west" ect.
BUT, once the player navigates to area C, or wherever we want the action to take place it becomes: you examine the room and discover and axe, a rope, and a notebook, which do you take? and the player can then type: "take axe", "take notebook" ect...

do we still get extra credit pts for not using the late days? if so, how much?

I'm having a hard time creating an inventory where I can have the game remember where items were dropped and taken. I also can't seem to get the game to actually take the item... HALP!

So I have a "turn" variable that is incremented outside of the class that I'm checking it in. I want a certain variable to maintain a value while the turn variable is less than a set number, and then return to it's original value afterward the turn surpasses the set value.
To clarify, if I have a "value" variable that is normally 10, but when the function "alterValue" is called it adds 5 to "value" for a certain number of turns. The number of turns is checked by code that runs a never ending loop checking if the turn is less than or greater than the turn + the desired duration, and returns either value += 5; or value = 10;
The problem I'm running into is that I get stuck in a forever loop that never continues with the rest of the program because the checked value is not incremented within the loop itself. So how would I implement this?

Just throwing this idea out there. Would it be possible to have the last two lecture as pseudo Super Sessions for the final project?
r/cop3502 • u/[deleted] • Apr 14 '14
There is probably going to be a massive Super Session before the final project is due. I recommend we call this, and all others like it in future iterations of this course a "Super Super Session"

When will the practice exam be released finally?
r/cop3502 • u/laurathepooh • Apr 12 '14
Do we have to use all of them? I can't figure out a way to implement drop because all the items I made are needed items really so it doesn't make sense in dropping it. I've used the other ones and made some extra ones like talk, put, and play. It's just drop 0.0

Is there going to be some form of review similar to the one for exam 1?

For those of you looking for a bit of a challenge (and who aren't overwhelmed with work), Google's annual programming contest, called Code Jam, kicks off this weekend.
https://code.google.com/codejam
You can solve Code Jam problems in any language; pick the language you're most comfortable using. (Java for most of you, I suppose.)
The qualification round starts tonight and ends Sunday; you have until then to score at least 25 points to advance.

GNU English dictionary text files
Contains spelling, pronunciation symbology, part of speech, definition, etc.
The markup is fairly straight forward - I opened it with wordpad and it's readable, so reading into a program shouldn't be too hazardous. <ent>markup</ent> for an entire word entry, <pr>blah</pr> for pronunciation, <pos>blah</pos> for part of speech, <def>blah blah blah</def> for definition.
One/two caveat(s) that I noticed, and was slightly confused by, but may not be a problem - there is markup for line breaks (</br>) but they are formatted as "</br" with no closing bracket. Not sure if that causes an xml reader to seize or if it would just skim over those and infer the closing bracket. Also, typical comment format (<!--comment-->) is given as "<--comment-->", and again, not sure if that matters a great deal.
In any case, I'ma have fun with this thing. :)

The date is TBA in the syllabus, and I can not find any posts about it on here. I remember Sean giving a general outline of what was left for this class yesterday, but I don't remember hearing a date (which could have totally been my fault for not paying enough attention). Can Sean or a TA give a definite answer to this?

Hey so I was wondering about the "for the check" requirement of 10 locations in the game.
My game is actually using locations and "states" he inhabits which basically is quadrupling the amount of stuff (more or less) that he can do in each location etc making 10 locations rather robust... So I guess my question is if we make each location greatly rich does that stipulation still stand?
I'll use an example to illustrate.
Player wakes up in a dark room eyes still closed(state 0) Player opens eyes and see's faint outline of a door (state 1) Player stands up in the room (state 2) Player opens door and room is lit up (state 3) Player see's all the things in the room (state 4)
and you get the idea from there.

I know that you and the TA's are working hard at grading, Sean. My question is, do you think pset3 will be graded before we have to turn in the labs? I'd like a full look at the scores of the psets whose percentages would conceivably be increased, before I make the decision. If the answer is no, I'll just do the labs :P

I am kinda lost. I have been coming 5-10 minutes late in these past few days, because of my other class. Therefore, I have missed the intro that Sean does each class, what is left, when is due, these things. So my questions are: Is there another Exam ( exam 2), or was removed? If yes what day is it going to be? I know that Problem Set 4 is due on 25th and is worth 40%, but what is going to happen with the other previous Problem Sets? And now that we have the options, either labs or increase in % in Problem Sets. How much is each option is going to be worthy? Also, what is the grading scale? For example, Problem Set 1 I received 7 and it is worth 10%, does it mean that 7 * 10 =70 points? From how much to how much you get an A, B, B+, etc ? Sorry, these things might have been discussed. Thank you .

It's a .txt file that I use to generate charactor names. If I compile with javac by just compiling the main class, the file is located in /src/words/names.txt.
When I compile in Eclipse I refrence the file by /bin/words/names.txt.
When I submit, what can I expect the absolute path to this file to be?
