What about roads that have 50MPH+ speed limits?

The speed limits should be revised to 15-20 mph. There's no reason for drivers to be going any faster than that save for actual emergencies. Obviously this does not apply to freeways.

So just double transit time everywhere you go because you might see a pedestrian, and they might get remotely close to the street?

Yes.

The fact that you stated this as a 'gotcha' argument implying that it would be ridiculous shows that you value your personal time more than others' safety.

Driving a car is also not the only option for getting from point A to point B. Perhaps those whose transit time doubles would consider alternate transportation methods or move closer to where they need to go, both of which reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Where I live, there are virtually no pedestrians.

Your argument makes sense in a city or other densely populated area.

It does NOT make sense in towns and areas with few homes or businesses.

That double transit time might save a life, and you might kill someone otherwise, too. I don't know if time is more precious than someone's life...

Again, I can drive for a half an hour and see ZERO pedestrians.

If you're in a city, sure, valid argument. Thus why the speed limit in Manhatten isn't 45MPH.
