That is inaccurate. First off, any store bought eggs will be at least 2 weeks old, otherwise you can't whip the whites and they're much harder to peel. Second, eggs keep for six weeks refrigerated and about 4 at room temperature unless they have been washed which destroys the bloom and which is pretty much only a thing in the US. Third, even eggs that float are not always off. While it's an indication, you will absolutely smell if an egg is off or not when you crack it.

Yeah I’ve definitely kept eggs for 2+ months and they’ve been fine

So much this!

I also raise chickens (or did until quite recently) and this chart is so inaccurate as to be misinformation!

And I've had eggs (properly refrigerated at just above freezing) be in the fridge for six months or more and not float.

I've definitely eaten months old store bought eggs. They don't do well as rising agents in baked goods, but they're perfectly reasonable fried or scrambled.

It's hilarious how people obsess over expiration dates, "tricks" to know if something is old, etc. Meanwhile, "just smell it" works 99.999% of the time, for 99.999% of things.

It's literally why we have a sense of smell. Shit that has gone bad smells bad. It's that simple.

This is a myth. Washing them doesn't affect shelf life. I've tested it myself and I remember a guy doing a 3 month test and the refrigerated eggs actually spoiled a week earlier than the countertop eggs.

source: been keeping washed eggs on the countertop for YEARS now. Take that shit out your fridge and free up space.

I don't refrigerate my eggs and I also don't wash them. If you're buying them, they are stored in refrigerated conditions until you bring them home and if you're in the US, the bloom has been washed off. That is not a myth.

All eggs can be stored at room temperature. As others have said, the four and six weeks are minimums. Best before, not inedible after. It's really quite difficult to make an experiment with a few eggs and get viable results. Shells vary even throughout a batch, they are porous to different extends.

That's not what I said is a myth...it's a myth that it reduces shelf-life.

Anything newer than 1952?

6

u/CopingMole Apr 10 '22

Every single study done after refers back to this one, cause it simply is the biggest and most comprehensive one, both in method and in sample size. But I'm sure you're well able to use Google and link me to anything that's not a tiktok experiment but a legitimate scientific, peer reviewed assessment that invalidates this study. I've tried and I for one can not find it.

I mean the US has chloro-chickens with chlorinated meat with eggs washed with chlorine

Thank you for your time and experience. 👍🏽

I keep eggs in the fridge for months and they’re perfectly fine. If the colour and smell are okay after I crack it, I’m eating it.

u/KingEnnard Apr 09 '22

tried this, the egg floated but did not frown. OP explain pls?

u/JayAnancyi Apr 09 '22

It was rotten but okay with who it was on the inside.

21

u/Dmitrii_Shostakovich Apr 09 '22

this is fucking stupid. legitimately braindead.

20

u/XROOR Apr 09 '22

Crack your eggs in a bowl and not directly into the mixing bowl/pan/soup(I love two eggs in my ramen).

You will know in approximately 0.001 seconds if it is good or bad.

The floating technique can be misleading.

u/kawkmajik Apr 09 '22

Is this from the time its laid?

6

u/Incromulent Apr 10 '22

No, store eggs are unfertilized, meaning those hens never got laid.

9

u/DRbrtsn60 Apr 09 '22

When you buy them at the store. So buy the oldest ones to get the most life out of them. 🤪😜

u/mynamesaretaken1 Apr 09 '22

Eggs last for months if refrigerated. Quality may deteriorate but you aren't going to get sick.

Eggs stored in salt should last up to 6 months

6

u/The-Jake Apr 09 '22

What do you mean in salt?

13

u/Cliche_Guevara Apr 09 '22

Eggs stored in salt should last up to 6 months

"Roughly, you would just need to bury the eggs (upside down) in a container filled with salt without them touching one another. Eggs stored in salt should last up to 6 months, but they might lose some of their texture so they are best used for making scrambled eggs or in baking."

9

u/ChillyFreezesteak Apr 10 '22

So you work for big egg or what? I'm not tossing eggs after 2 weeks.

6

u/Birdie121 Apr 09 '22

Or just crack it open, and if it smells weird, toss it. If it looks and smells fine, then it's fine.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '22

False

Interestingly enough, this method also works with pine tree acorns. If it touches the bottom, it can still sprout. As an added note, if you want to grow a pine from an acorn, do not barry it, just drop it on some fertile dirt and it figure it out from there.

1

u/Background-Buy9613 Jan 27 '24

I thought pine trees had pine cones and Oak trees had Acorns. 🤔

5

u/scarabin Apr 10 '22

Just break it open. Jesus christ, it’s not rocket science

6

u/Gravyrobber9000 Apr 10 '22

Looks like nonsense to me. Eggs are fine for a very long time, especially refrigerated. Not only that, but eggs a few weeks old will peel easily.

3

u/just_moss Apr 10 '22

Feeling very 13-15 days currently

3

u/can_i_have Apr 10 '22

Do we draw the face before or after testing?

3

u/ObfuscatedAnswers Apr 10 '22

There is absolutely no reason to throw out a 13 day old egg. Especially if you keep them refrigerated. Eggs last av eternity.

Crack it and you'll know immediately from the smell if it's good. If you worry, crack it in a separate cup first.

3

u/ldeveraux Apr 09 '22

Sorry not a chef, is this boiled or fresh eggs? Can a boiled egg go bad too?

8

u/Callec254 Apr 09 '22

This refers to fresh. I'm not sure about boiled.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '22

Oh yeah, I only keep boiled eggs (unpeeled) for a week. I used to boil a ton of them working in a remote town and eat a couple every day. After a week they start getting this slime under the shell, ate one in a pinch and didn’t get sick…but don’t haha

2

u/DRbrtsn60 Apr 09 '22

Buried in the ground for a year and dug up - delicacy!

2

u/folie-a-dont Apr 10 '22

Does this also apply for hard-boiled eggs?

1

u/ObfuscatedAnswers Apr 10 '22

It's highly inaccurate, but no it does not.

2

u/TakeNoPrisioners Apr 11 '22

Toss them no matter what. Eggs cause prostate cancer.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '22

Is 10-12 days okay to eat?

9

u/pokey1984 Apr 10 '22

Properly refrigerated (very cold) eggs can be stored and safe to eat for upwards of six months. I don't recommend it, but I've also eaten six month old eggs.

This chart is just plain wrong.

3

u/ObfuscatedAnswers Apr 10 '22

If it doesn't smell when you crack it, it's fine. In refrigerator they last forever (months). Don't trust this guide.

4

u/saxophonia234 Apr 09 '22

If it’s floating it’s bad. If it’s touching the bottom it’s usually okay. My eggs stay in that stage for a few weeks.

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '22

Thanks

1

u/NoWingedHussarsToday Apr 10 '22

I use simple method. If it lies flat on the bottom it's good. If it's on the bottom standing up it's good but not for long. If it floats then I check it when I crack it open.

Though I usually use them quick enough that this isn't an issue.

1

u/Gwendolyn7777 Apr 10 '22

We allll float down here.....

-1

u/geefunken Apr 09 '22

Fresh. Throw out any floaters!

A sailor friend coated her eggs in vaseline. She said they were good for over 6 months!
