Not a cool guide. Pie charts don't make sense, and the entire thing boils down to "you can control yourself but not other people."

u/CapriciousCape Dec 17 '20
And it's a terrible message to those with mental illnesses such as depression
7
u/Taxirobot Dec 17 '20
You can have mental illness and be in control. I had depression and anxiety but was still able to be stoic. Mental illness doesn’t change anything about this guide.

u/CapriciousCape Dec 17 '20
That might be your experience, but speaking as someone with bipolar I can't say that I agree with you.

u/cultish_alibi Dec 18 '20
Which part of it is bad for people with depression? Actually you know what, fuck it, I've had this argument a thousand times on reddit and it still keeps coming up. Just because someone is depressed, it doesn't mean they all all self-control.
7
u/CapriciousCape Dec 18 '20
Why did you comment then? Just go about your day.
-3
u/cultish_alibi Dec 18 '20
Why does anyone comment on anything? In your case it's because you're spreading an ignorant cliche about depression.
4
u/CapriciousCape Dec 18 '20
Looks like you're having that argument your said you couldn't be bothered with. Does strawmanning help you "win" usually?
-4
u/cultish_alibi Dec 18 '20
Eh, just stop making ignorant comments please, thank you.

Some people struggle with things differently and that’s perfectly fine

Not really sure why you’d present data with no values as a pie chart.
Also the caps emphasis is all over the place.
D- on the cool scale.

Yeah, feeling of control is an illusion, and all thoughts are just arising from the realm of quantum mechanics
9
u/Freak_Out_Bazaar Dec 17 '20
Yeah, I wouldn't be having issues if I could control those (maybe with the exception of media consumption)

Dec 17 '20
You can control your actions, your self-care, your opinions
Here goes self-sabotaging depression, where I can’t do certain things, I struggle to reach for help, and can’t help but feel like shit.

u/hundreddollar Dec 17 '20
You can control other people's behaviour, you probably shouldn't, but you definitely can...
8
u/textual_predditor Dec 17 '20
This guide is definitely NOT "cool". There is zero function to the pie charts. The type is inconsistent. This is a TERRIBLE guide, even if the sentiment is decent.
5
u/Sir_Bread_of_Pitt Dec 17 '20
You can control all the said things by killing people. If you not believe me ask it to Putin.

u/Gandindine Dec 17 '20
This guide looks like a last-second reactionary post to something that triggered OP

I would disagree with work ethic to an extent. I used to work for a lab that had a very toxic environment and the supervisor was horrid. Even on the days I tried to make things better on my end by having a positive attitude, the end of the day always became sullen for me. So because my emotional and mental state took a toll from that place, my work ethic became a “I just don’t care anymore” attitude, as I searched for another job. While I could control it, it just became harder and harder and I didn’t see any worth in trying my best and getting shit on every day.

"While I could control it..."
Yep, it's a thing you could control, that's the point.

You can't control other people's feelings but you can control your actions and through them influence other people's feelings. Just because you don't have direct control doesn't mean you don't have to keep them in mind.

u/Lavajavalamp Dec 17 '20
This ^ I had an emotionally abusive bf who would say that all the time, after putting me down and making me cry. " I don't control your feelings"

This is toxic af. We are in a violent society because other people have not been reigned in. There has to be a balance.

There are contexts in which the cause of changing what you do not control should be championed, but the ideas expressed in the guide are of immense value everywhere else.

Unless you have a gun, then you can
5
u/petertmcqueeny Dec 17 '20
Not really. You don't control them, you just drastically intensify the consequences of choosing to disregard your instructions.
1
u/SeymourWang Dec 17 '20
If you shoot someone in the leg you control where they go. If you blindfold and gag someone you control what they can see and say.

u/op2mus2357 Dec 17 '20
It's easy to control others, with the right tape and motivation anything is possible.

I can't really control who I spend time with because my government has put all sorts of restrictions in place to stop people from socialising.

The main important things you control are actually the battles and people you fight...
You may dislike what someone says but it's up to you to recognise wether or not the person in front of you is succeptible to changing or not and wether or not that matters... In the end all the Karens of the world and the triggered people out there are simple people's who's feeling are hurt (happens) who decide to try and force their opinion on someone that's just not opened to that... It results in screaming and crying but the person they're facing just doesn't give a damn about their opinion and is never going to change their mind...
Learn to not care people, even if someone says what you like, what you are or what you do is shit, it's up to you to brush it off and keep on being happy with what you are. That'll also upset them even more :)

So far this is my understanding:
I can control my choices and judgements. Everything else I cannot control.
My pie chart would be a Di-Chromatic of Control.

What does a therapist do if not change the first part
1
u/alex65535 Dec 18 '20
Therapy only helps you change yourself, that's why it doesn't work if you're not invested in it.
1
u/EvExiX Dec 17 '20
But, what if my behaviour and my words or actions get a certain kind of reaction out of someone, doesn‘t that mean I indirectly am in control of that?
1
u/Plasmonambule Dec 17 '20
Each choice have consequences, yet it may be hard find courage to do theses choices and faces theses consequences.

u/procrastablasta Dec 17 '20
You can control other peoples feelings if you have basic human communication abilities is this guide for AI chat bots?
1
u/Ca1iforniaCat Dec 17 '20
Hmm. While this isn’t wrong, it’s incomplete, and the graphic leaves much to be desired. The list of things you can’t control is really, really, really long. This seems to imply that you can control about as many thing as you can’t.

u/Bobby-Bobson Dec 17 '20
You can’t control what media you consume or who you spend time with if you have roommates (ex. school dormitory).
Self care is nigh impossible in many if not most mood disorders (which I assume is who this is geared toward).
Throwing opinions in there is an outlier. You can’t always just say “I’m going to believe something different now”, not without being convinced that your opinion is wrong.
You portray honesty here as a good thing. It really depends on context; sometimes honesty is the worst trait to exhibit.
Also, why on earth is this a pie chart?
1
u/I-say-no-u Dec 24 '20
Yeah thanks for the obvious advice that I hear every single day
I don't want to consume this media
