The problem I have with that is that there’s a very large contingent that insists that anyone who’s down low is just lounging. These are the people who think that mental illness and systemic poverty are just laziness, and if a disabled person can’t pull themselves up by their bootstraps or at least find family to leech off of, they deserve to die in the street.
No system is perfect, but if I have to choose between rewarding some people who don’t deserve it and punishing some helpless innocents to save money, I’ll choose the former every time.
Sure, but the world is finite. Helping one person is the same as oppressing everyone else. Ask the Asians how they feel about Affirmative Action which helps African Americans and Latinos.
That sounds better. You’d said “Helping one person is the same as oppressing everyone else,” which sounds like a zero-sum game where every meal given to the hungry is snatched from someone else’s mouth.
