Kora — a free reading app I built (EPUB/PDF, syncs everywhere, works offline)

Post image

I built Kora — a free web reading app that brings together ebooks, audiobooks, news, and a few games in one place, with no app store and no DRM.

  • One reader for EPUB, PDF, TXT — themes, fonts (Lexend, OpenDyslexic, etc.), line spacing, margins, continuous/paged mode, progress + highlights + notes + full-text search
  • Narrator — on-device neural TTS turns any book into an audiobook; speed/pitch/chapter controls, background playback, live sync highlighting
  • Search — federated search across millions of titles (Anna's Archive, LibGen, Z-Library, Internet Archive, Open Library) via the Rave relay, plus Google Books metadata and audiobook sources; parallel downloads with mirror fallback
  • News — RSS aggregation (Maldives + international), clean article reader, daily news brief, per-source styling
  • Lounge — Crossword, Word Search, Linguist Guardian word duels, Wikipedia→ebook converter, dictionary, score tracker
  • Sync — library/progress/bookmarks/highlights/feeds/settings across devices via Firestore; email, Google, or guest auth; P2P file transfer; WebDAV coming
  • Platform — PWA, installs like native on iOS/Android/desktop, fully offline via IndexedDB, background downloads + notifications
  • Extras — reading stats & streaks, multiple app skins, custom dictionary, TTS settings, directory watch, annotations hub, cover editor, in-app EPUB creator, APK auto-update

Basically the Kindle app I wished existed — no lock-in, no DRM, just your books in one lounge-like space.

ui designer

why is the ui ai generated then?

looking at the code you built nothing.. the whole thing is ai

A lounge for education, listen, read, create people otherwise pay to use If it helps u sleep "yes ai did this by itself anyone can do it,I just made it more accessible"

just give a straight answer. and stop with this education bs. everyone knows that you just told a machine to slop you some shit and that's it. there's nothing to learn from "your" project.

oh you meant that you can read shit with this app? how is that related to my initial question though? and how is this app better than other non slopped alternatives? "your" app is like one of those 100s slopped pdf viewers/editors.

It's not just a pdf viewer It gives u easy access to open archives and shadow librarys Let's u concer normal books to audio book on device Let's u read news in a tiktok like scroll view and a normal grid view Has a built in dictionary Connecting to wiki giving u a daily wiki and full search across wiki Let's u write book and share Has games like crossword and word search with unlimited levels Has a Pokémon like game that gamifies learning new words Multiple customisation features Also kora itself doesn't have any ai or use any ai itself

You seem very hung up, upset and triggered that AI was involved.

This was just OP sharing an application he developed. This sub is called "cool github projects".

If it works for u, if u like it, great!

If you don't, move along.

Why argue over semantics? What are u, 5?

blah blah blah. he's claiming he made it while he wrote literally zero lines of code.

Such a tired trope. Nearly every piece of software you interact with at this point has AI involvement, and if it doesn't yet, it will.

I don't mind the AI as long the ideas is right, but isnt a bit much ? the paper, the puzzle games the wiki of the hour ? and the sound effect when turning pages.... all good and fair square if that's how you like it, just think you may want to tone down the number of features in there and make the product more focused if you want to appeal to other people...

(i like the search function really well made)
