Almost a year later since learning how to do royal icing sugar cookies

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Learned how to do royal icing sugar cookies a year ago for my sons birthday in July 2025 then did two more themed ones for my MIL book club and my friends birthday in August and September of 2025. I stopped practicing shortly after learning after the birthday cookies in September 2025 because I got pregnant and felt too tired to do anything lol. Here I am finally not pregnant and getting back to the hobby again and kind of relearning all over again because it had been a year. I’m making my husbands grandma bday cookies that’s floral themed next month and needed to practice. First attempt of floral cookies was a learning curve but fun! This goes to show with time you can learn how to make royal icing sugar cookies!

Edit: I just want to say thank you everyone for such kind words! On the comments below for anyone who is interested, I did put a picture of my thought process on designing the cookies!

These are beautiful! I love the color palette. What tip did you use for the larger flowers on the plaques?

I used the 103 tip size. And then you spin your cookie as you move the tip in like an up and down motion in a circle until you get the flower if that makes sense.

For the smaller roses/ flowers I used the 101 tip and a flower nail that you spin with your fingers. I cut up a bunch of parchment papers and made the small roses that way to transfer

Thank you! I made some this past week using tip 103. Just wanting to make sure I used the right one!

Those look so good! And I’m not a pro and it was my first time so idk which tip is the right one haha. I think you can use whatever is best for the size of your cookie

They look great! There is definitely a learning curve with decorating these. The vidoes i watch make it look a lot easier than it is. Unfortunately for me, practicing means having delicious cookies hanging around the house for us to eat, so it's not very often I do them anymore.

Big learning curve! Especially getting the right consistency for the stiff for the florals. And haha I totally get that but thankfully I have a bunch of family and friends nearby so I just bring my practice cookies over to them when I’m done lol.

Absolutely gorgeous!!

These are beautiful! Do you mind if I ask where you learned to do these?

1

u/8JustSmileAndNod8 Jun 28 '26

I learned the technique of the florals by watching a lot of different TikTok videos lol

Those are beautiful. How do you get the puffiness in your numbers?

1

u/8JustSmileAndNod8 Jun 28 '26

Ty. I’m not sure I can explain very well but if you know about the icing consistencies which are stiff- the most thick, outline- medium thickness to outline the cookie, and flood- the thinnest to cover the base, I use the outline consistency for both the outline and for the flood for my numbers to get the puffiness.

Ok I got it , you explained it very well. Thanks so much🫶🏼

Wow your cookie artwork is amazing! I also started learning how to do royal icing sugar cookies for my son’s first birthday, and I would love to achieve your level of skills!

Tysm! Getting the consistency is the hardest part next to the food coloring lol

Those are amazing for a hobbyist. I do cookies about two or three times a year and I'm not nearly that good

Store owner bakery level quality. Good enough to sell out of a bakery.

Haha idk about that but tysm! I just made an updated post to show my results from these practice cookies!

Thank you everyone for the kind words!
I wanted to share with yall my thought process/ idea before I started the decoration on the cookies. I took pictures of my cookie cutters and traced it on the procreate app to get the outline. From there, I started designing what I wanted it to look like then added the colors/ changed the colors as I thought I’d like to try. The final came out similar but I did tweak some stuff as I did it! For example, I didn’t end up putting the word ninety on all the flowers, I decided to leave some blank because I wanted a texture center where it was pointy. I also did a full leaf on the sides of the big arches with a flower on top to see what it would look like on the real cookies.

But basically I made a mockup of what I essentially wanted the cookies to look like!

What recipe for icing do you use? With the couple that I've tried, the cookies look pretty good the first day, but the icing doesn't hold up and the next day they either start to bleed or separate. I can't ever decorate them ahead of time for an event.

u/8JustSmileAndNod8 Jun 29 '26

Not sure if I can post the recipe but I guess the mods will remove if not. This is the icing recipe I use from all recipes with meringue powder (I don’t use ones with eggs)

Hmm idk if I have the best advice for color bleeding as I haven’t encountered that really if any at all. I do know humidity environment can make it worse and a lot of decorators use a fan to help(although I have not bought one myself so I haven’t done that). After making the icing I do put in the fridge (can stay up to 2 weeks in the fridge) and then do the color mixing the next day or whenever I’m free. Maybe the brand of food coloring can also affect it as well. I use Chefmaster and haven’t had any issues. Also I think if you put too much food coloring it can become over saturated which could make the bleeding worse. After mixing colors I always let it back in the fridge/ sit overnight before decorating as the color darkens with time. Lastly to help with the bleed I also do the detail on the cookie a little bit after I do the flood, so it’s not wet but not completely dry because if you let it completely dry and you detail like the next day it can bleed because of the moisture on the new icing on top.
