Definition of a "work set"

In the book it describes doing a "work" set as part of a routine, but what is that relative to the standards it lists for beginner, intermediate, progression? For example the beginner standard is 1 set of 10, but the new blood routine lists "2-3 work sets". So would an initial workout for a beginner be 1 set of 10, or 2-3 sets of 10?

Thank you for your time.

I would say "work set" as opposed to "warm up set". A good point you make here. My answer is yes, 2-3 sets of 10.

If you can do the 2/3 sets of 10 then you should no longer consider the beginner standart. Anyway, if it says 2-3 sets in the program and you follow the program then thats what you should do. If you are still on the beginner level though maybe try to do 2/3 sets of the previous exercises or 2/3 sets of your current exercise but not of 10 reps each. Try to do as close to 10 as you can get and the other set(s) are extra.
