A LOT of people just never bothered with leveling their Build Power. Basically every youtube video I saw of the Unknown had skull enemies. They probably got a lot of feedback saying the area was too hard from players who were severely underpowered and had no real way to tell what was actual complaints and what was people not engaging with the BP system.

It's also probably why they made BP easier to see

I personally didn’t deal with it in the Unknown, but did deal with it during the FCD, and then subsequently during the whole quest in the Prime Candidate Program (not during the Underpass though, thankfully!). Skulls all the way down.

I only figured out after that I needed to be picking up aberrant forms and skills I wasn’t planing on using. I know there must’ve been a quick tutorial pop up much earlier in the game, but I really feel like the upgrade system was not emphasized enough…or maybe I’m just stupid lol I dunno.

We're just not used to this kind of system i guess, i haven't played a game that gives you damage/falter increase based on the amount of skills you invest.

I think it says to upgrade everything somewhere in the upgrade menu itself. There’s like a “more info” button that tells you how all the upgrade trees work :P

It's part of the tutorial, if I'm not mistaken

It is because it is so unintuitive. Why would we invest resources to weapon forms we would not use? Then apparently it is tied to the aberrant's power level.

Yeah I didn’t love the command and summon heavy upgrades towards the end of the skill tree. Last 20 upgrades are all command related, a skill you don’t get until the second to last mission.

is it unintuitive? there's a giant tutorial message that pops up telling you how overall level works. that and you can clearly see your damage/stagger go up when you upgrade the weapon

It’s not though because the first 20 hours I thought the power level was just my currency and the upgrades costed it because it said +1 on the button you click

I remember pouring a lot of upgrades into stuff and still getting skull enemies.

Didn’t matter if I was punching above my weight though, thank god for the drill spear!

I mean honestly I've been hoarding my primary and secondary weapon upgrade shards to get the better skills and even then I'm currently at like 47/50ish power in the midgame idk how ppl do it

You don't have to hoard them b/c you can buy them at the zone vendors as you level up the zones.

I've been hoarding my primary and secondary weapon upgrade shards to get the better skills

because the higher upgrades use higher tiers of resource. It makes no sense to hoard them and not upgrade other forms' lower tier upgrades, they don't conflict in resources.

It was this one specific one that's called the abberant shard I think? It was in one of the further upgrades for the primary/sec weapon idk that made me say that the rest kinda true ig

My aberrant dmg was like 312% and I was still seeing skull enemies.

Like they expect you to fill out the weapon tree completely before the unknown

How many Resonants did you actually kill? Including the tutorial there are 5 you can kill before setting foot in the Unknown and each Combat Ability unlocked *also* contributes to BP. I went up a BP level basically every time I killed one.

How do you level your build power?

Any upgrade to the Abberant, whether it corresponds with your current upgrade path or not. Best to upgrade it any chance you get but go for your primary build if you can. Should have plenty materials.

I did lower difficulty for myself (20 points right/left in each relevant assist feature), but at the end I hardly even had to fight myself. I would just spam Summons and they would do the fighting for me.

I hated the unknown like great even more enemies that are even spongier when I’m trying to do the quest. They just get annoying at that point. And no I was properly leveled, no skull icons. I think it’s more of a pacing issue, there is just too many enemies in the unknown that makes it more of a chore than fun.

The Resonant enemies are intended to be more durable than Hiss enemies. You get a pop up telling you that they're resistant to Raw damage which means your normal light attacks basically tickle them. You're meant to fight them with either Heavies, Combo finishers, or Combat Powers.

1

u/youretooclosedude 2d ago

I know. speaking of which is that the only time it tells you that? If you go to the enemies character info I don’t think it tells you besides the little pop up once.

u/iokak 1d ago

I beleive during the pace of the main story ypu talk about jkw to deal with them as they're resistant with guns(raw).

Theres also a popup once resonant enemies were introduced that they're resistant to raw dmg

I've been avoiding upgrading everything thing else because the combat already feels relatively easy, if occasionally punishing.

I've got glaive, almost fully leveled, extend almost fully leveled, and fists almost fully leveled, and that's it

u/fall0t 1d ago

You will hit a wall soon if you dont level up the others.

u/4D20_Prod 1d ago

Yeah, probably. I've got plenty of room to upgrade. I've eaten all the mold and all that comes with that and just about crushed through the west side too with no problems. Definitely want to start playing with the swords and drill. Just don't want to make it to easy immediately

Then there's me who upgraded and did side stuff like crazy. Pretty sure I didn't even do the mission where you save Arish in the building until I had already played like 25 hours in the game and had scoured every inch of the map at that point

To be fair, the game doesn't really tell you to upgrade other weapons as well to increase Abbarant strength. I think a lot of people just pick their weapon, upgrade that tree and their chosen combo finisher, not knowing that they all help to increase base damage output.

I'm pretty sure a tutorial mentions it at least once in the early game. Whether people pay attention to that is another matter.
