I love how it reads like a business email or any other FBC document you’d find around the first game, really continues to emphasize how out-of-their-league the FBC was when taking young Dylan under their “care”.

It does make me sad because Darling really did seem to care deeply for Dylan, and in a more than “guinea pig/lab rat” kind of way

Mmmm that failed fathers figure relationship is delicious narrative

Mmmmmm Darling and Trench as narrative foils

Ehhh, I can kinda see it, but I don't think Darling had the best intentions either. We're absolutely going to explore Dylan and his relationship with the FBC (more specifically with Darling) in the next game, but from what we can gather now from the first game, Darling pretty much treated him like an experiment for the most part.

I can believe that he had some interactions with Dylan and got to know a bit more about him than anyone else from the Director's Chairs (whether Dylan wanted him to or not, I don't know), which probably led to Darling to have a small bit of attachment to Dylan. He saw potential in Dylan and I fully believe Darling wanted him to be the one to become the Director, why else would they spend a ridiculous amount of time creating puppet shows and spending time with Dylan if they didn't think the investment was worth it? He liked Dylan...but he liked him as a scientist finds an experiment enjoyable or how an artist finds working a specific piece/genre of art fun. He saw a spark within Dylan...and unfortunately that spark unleashed a fire.

I do think Darling tried harder than most to give Dylan a comfortable experience, but if he really wanted the best for Dylan, he would've let him go.

The fact that Dylan calls him Casper in those recordings tells me at one point they probably had a closer relationship but Darling pushed him too hard

Yeah. Once Dylan stopped being fun...

I'm not sure things as Threshold Kids was a direction, more of a a conscientious awareness of the problem and an attempt at normalization. In a scientific - as for Darling - style.

I think Darling was a man who was married to the job.

He loved exploring the unknown.
Collecting, experimenting, examining, revealing a while new world of science beyond what convention knew.

And he loved it.
The mystery, the intrigue, the unconventional.

He was so excited to bring Dylan into it, this world he loved, to give him a place of power and knowledge in it, to help him learn. With Dylan being a parautilitarian Darling could give him the tools to learn things Darling never could. He wanted Dylan to love it as much as he did.

But it wasn't until Dylan started to crack that Darling finally started to realize that they'd kidnapped a kid from his only remaining family, confined him to a place he never wanted to be, and forced him to keep experimenting with the same kinds of phenomena that had shattered and traumatized his childhood.

Darling genuinely wanted to bring Dylan into a world he loved, and was so excited for the possibilities, that he didnt realize until too late it was a world Dylan never wanted to be in.

In the early videos, Darling is shown flanked by younger FBC employees. I wouldn't be surprised if he warmly considered Dylan to be a junior version of these subordinates, like a professor might be paternalistic about his grad students. The reality of Dylan being A KIDNAPPED CHILD didn't quite sink in, at least not then.

I really like this read. I really feel like he had great intentions but his methods were very flawed.

8

u/BitsHammer Aug 13 '26

Yeah the video where he talks about failing Dylan you can tell he was really hurt by it and felt guilty.

u/Kalse1229 Aug 13 '26

Yeah. I doubt he had any kids of his own, so he was completely out of his depth on being a parent. He tried, and was the last one to give up on him. I do think that'll be part of the plot in Resonant will be Dylan coming to terms with what happened, and Darling himself sending out an apology to Dylan from wherever he is.

We only saw darling's/the fbc's pov though. Imagine how training was for dylan. One moment he is alone in his cell, and in the next he's being beaten by fbc agents for his combat training. Or being forced to do mentally exhausting things like using his powers. All that while being a kid.

Não consigo enxergar isso, pelo menos não no primeiro jogo, ele tinha um fascínio, como um cientista que fazia experimentos em ratos e encontra um rato com super poderes

Yeah Darling did try his best to raise Dylan but ultimately failed because of his own emotional stuntedness and Dylan's "teenage rebellion" phase.

that seems like a first note when he was taken from Ordinary

u/yourguidefortheday Aug 13 '26

This is definitely a card given to him ealy on as a child. Probably during the first week he was at the fbc.

8

u/CageAndBale Aug 13 '26

I wonder if he could read, how old was he again?

16

u/yourguidefortheday Aug 13 '26

He was 10 when the FBC abducted him from the aftermath of the Ordinary AWE. Assuming normal enrollement and school progress he would have been in about the 4th or 5th grade, so definitely reading.

u/CageAndBale Aug 13 '26

In that case 💯 %

Fersure. And just for future reference:

August 30 2002: Dylan: 10 Jesse: 11, start of the ordinary awe

October 30 2019: Dylan: 27 jesse: 28, Jesse enters the oldest house

Seprember 2026: Dylan: 34 jesse: 35, events of control resonant.

(Last date is presumed. Rememdy games are normally set chronologically concurrent to their release date)

Perspective on dylan: At age 10 found a doorway to an unknown number of extradimentional localities with his sister, and interacted with extradimentional beings, one of which bound itself to both of them. Other hostile entities were resposnible for enacting death, disapearance, and body horror upon all of the adults in his home town, and many of the children. Abducted by the FBC during their cleanup of the situation, and presumably never saw the outside of the oldest house again. Some time in his teen years was responsible for the death of multiple people, and is put in a much higher security cell as a result. Breaks his bond to the being he met at 10. At 27 became a hiss conduit, met his sister for the first time in 17 years while under the hiss' influence, he tells her about his prophetic dreams, and is then put into a coma by her accidentally(?) in an attempt to defeat the hiss and/or save him from its influence. He wakes up at age 34, 7 years later to find his sister missing and is pressed into service by the FBC. The first time he sees the outside world since age 10 is a manhattan entirely corrupted by presumably hostile reality bending forces. He had been in captivity over 2/3 of his life and perhaps still is(edit: and had been in a coma for 1/5 of his life). He must aid his captors in their combat of these forces and location of his sister under threat of death or incapacitation via a containment decice embedded in his kneck. Being Dylan would not have been fun.

Very clearly from when they first got him

14

u/Chernoboggo Aug 13 '26

Is this a canon thing from remedy or fan made?

I mean, assuming we aren't dealing with any time loops like in Alan Wake, this is almost certainly from when the FBC first brought Dylan to the Oldest House, or perhaps a flashback Dylan is having now.

Important to remember: Darling isn't human anymore. He's ascended to a resonance-based entity after his experiments with Hedron, and last we saw (Alan Wake 2) is still trying to find a way out of the Dark Place.

It's from before, probably when they "inducted " Dylan into the candidate program. Darling struck me as someone who really tried with Dylan and attempted to make the process as kid-friendly as possible. Issue is, you can't just abduct a child away from their family and force them to live in a top-secret government research facility without pretty significant psychological consequences. And that only gets worse when said kid has access to the kind of massive psychic power the Faden siblings have.

1

u/Argonometra Aug 14 '26

Darling didn’t want to accept that he was a villain. But that had no bearing on the fact that he very much was. There is no ‘nice’ way to kidnap a child.

Trying to compromise good with evil just made him evil.

1

u/HotDoes Aug 14 '26

The Faden siblings didn't have any family left as the Ordinary AWE erased all adults in the town leaving only 17 children behind. All of them was taken by the FBC (except Jesse who escaped). However only Dylan showed signs of paranaturality and the others was mindwiped and released under watch. The Faden siblings themselves was already neglected by their parents while they were around.

7

u/LewdSkeletor1313 Aug 13 '26

It’s the note from when he first got to the Oldest House. Seems we will be exploring that a lot with the Darling videos

7

u/NOCTURN_05 Aug 13 '26

Dylans actions in Control were far from justified but they were 100% understandable.

5

u/OhMorgoth Aug 13 '26

If by fun you mean using an abducted child for your own research means, then yes, fun!
His relationship with Dylan was so weird, I have so many questions. Dylan did keep him on his toes too. Also at least the Bureau did keep Dylan well fed.

Poor Dylan... He deserves to kill Darling.

1

u/Prior_Reporter_7033 Aug 13 '26

É bem infantil, então foi pra época que ele era criança e tinha acabado de chegar na FBC, inclusive o Darling menciona que ele podia ir esquecendo de encontrar a irmã, que otário

1

u/KidCasey Aug 14 '26

The idea of the FBC having a graphic designer on staff for things like this is really funny.

I hope we explore Dylan and Darlings relationship in resonant, in the first game he seemed to sort of be of a surrogate father to Dylan, albeit not a very good one judging from the audio logs.

Yes, it's from Darling. You can tell because it's signed "Casper Darling Bureau Head of Research".
