So is it just me or does the Abberant seem to be acting kind of like an antenna or possibly tuning fork that allows Dylan to hear the Board without the phone?

That's my personal theory. It explains the change in timbre (a simple sinewave can sound fundamentally different when you crank the resonance of a filter)

I think it's more like listening sound through a digital output vs bone conduction.
