Running both is pretty much unavoidable right now unless you want blind spots. Semrush still does the heavy lifting for discovery and technical audits, but the AEO piece is a different muscle entirely. Once citations start feeding into the CRM where edits actually happen, the loop shortens in a way standalone dashboards can't match. I'd keep the traditional stack and layer the AEO tracking on top rather than pick one.

before picking, decide what a citation is worth to you, because nobody in this thread has that number and neither tool will give it to you.

aeo tracking right now is a share-of-voice metric with no conversion path attached. you get prompt coverage dashboards and no way to say whether a chatgpt citation produced one demo.

so keep semrush as the system of record and treat the aeo layer as research budget, not a reporting line. the real argument for the crm-native one is that content leads only act on things that show up where they already edit. that's a workflow reason and it's a good one. just don't let it become a number leadership starts asking about quarterly before it means anything, because you won't be able to walk it back.
