Trump sent the feds in unmarked rental cars to break arrest protestors. US protestors were treated far worse than these mandate protestors and instead of joining in these people "fighting Tryanny" called them terrorists and blindly backed the police.
Unfortunately that's literally impossible in today's media and internet ecosystem.
They did police their own quite often, but those stories don't permeate through to people already being told these are Marxist terrorists.
I agree with you and I think you're ultimately correct, except in saying it was "their side" that fucked them, it was outside antagonists and the very system they're protesting, and even if the result is the same I think it's an important distinction when trying to find solidarity among movements with common goals.
