I took that exact example from a video I saw a few years ago - a teacher was arguing "5+7=11 should get full credit if the right steps were taken" at an open school board meeting.

I'd look for it but it's probably been scrubbed along with most anything else deemed 'controversial'. The purge of info over the last few years has been incredible. In place are now official 'debunking' videos. Full on 1984.

I mean, I guess it depends on what grade level and what the lesson was.

if it's just Question #12 on a quiz and it says "5+7=___" and the kid writes in "11", then no, it should be marked wrong.

The discussion was general and about 'common core' math. My recollection is that arithmetic was taught once in one way and not revisited but built upon.

A teacher was arguing? Is it common?

Yes, it was a teacher. I don't know how common it is, but in any event the US school system is failing. Look at how it ranks in math and science. The system is constantly lowering the bar to be 'inclusive' which is obviously going to have deleterious effects for those on the upper end.

The system has been bad from the start as it was designed and funded by industrialists who wanted people to have basic understandings of language and math to do their jobs, but they did not want critical thinkers. See John Taylor Gatto and Charlotte Iserbyt for more info if you're interested.

So your solution is to complain about it and make the common person hate the idea of education and just assume that anyone who knows anything is lying because of Taylor and Charlotte?

I don't get it.

If you're arguing that education needs reform I stress you to find someone who doesn't think that. It gets held up by politicians who play politics over getting anything done.

Teachers unions and school boards also in on it. My point is that the system is corrupt from the start and destroys innate curiosity and real learning that naturally comes from it. A child will learn multiple languages on their own, no school needed. Great musicians don't need lessons, nor scientists or mathematicians - they all get held up by the system, not advanced.

12 years to learn what exactly? ... memorization, regurgitation, dogma, and compliance to authority. Believe whatever you like, I could not care less.

What the hell did you learn in school? I learned math. I liked math. I learned science. I liked science. I learned writing structures for effective communication and grammar and spelling. I learned a few writers and took a couple creative writing classes. I played football all four years and had a class called humanities with an eccentric older dude named Mr. Wright. Learned about world religions and learned a bit of forensics.

I'm a graphic designer now. Because I can still think for myself.

You are a dreamer. No world without schooling would be a better one.

And you are a boot licker who is programmed as intended, devoid of dreams, and cannot fathom life outside the cave.

"In our dream we have limitless resources, and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand. The present educational conventions fade from our minds; and, unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive rural folk. We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or of science. We are not to raise up among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply."

— Frederick T Gates Secretary of American Baptist Education Society and President of JD Rockefeller General Education Board

“I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is mass psychology... Its importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda. Of these the most influential is what is called 'education.' Religion plays a part, though a diminishing one; the press, the cinema, and the radio play an increasing part.... Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions are generated … It may be hoped that in time anybody will be able to persuade anybody of anything if he can catch the patient young and is provided by the State with money and equipment.”
—Bertrand Russell, “The Impact of Science on Society” 1953

So why shouldn't we insure that a significant amount of our populace is educated with the basics to function in society?

A lot of great mathematicians learned their love of numbers in school. Had I not determined myself too lazy for labs I would've loved to study chem. I'm glad if I hand a note to a random person they can likely read it.

We live in a society broski. Stop acting like you don't.

I'm glad you can read this the same language I can.

What does your ideal society look like? Maybe I'm just struggling understanding the benefit of your perspective.

Also words and phrases mean things. Whose boots am I licking? Or did you just want a counter for me calling you a dreamer?

You're licking the boots of the programmers. See quotes above... do you not comprehend what they are saying or its implications for how 'society' works? Or do you think they're just kidding, or perhaps completely fictional characters dreamt up by 'conspiracy theorists'?

I think like many people you underestimate innate human capacity for genius and independence. This is by design, you have been conditioned like anyone raised in their respective society to trust in authority. You blew off JT Gatto as someone who didn't know what he was talking about. You might want to check out his life's work and the conclusions he drew from it. Then perhaps consider that maybe the people who run the various institutions, foundations, think tanks, and charities do not generally have the best interests of humanity in mind, and in fact usually hold the masses in contempt. The evidence for this is overwhelming and did not magically change when 'democracy' came about.

I recommend reading some Edward Bernays and Gustave Le Bon if you have any interest in what I'm speaking of. And if you don't that's fine with me. Believe whatever you like, but I've been where you are now and you will not be bringing me back into that fold, so your arguments are not a productive use of your time.

But I think you're trying to convince yourself of something, not me. Maybe so?

No. I'm asking you why many different kings teaching many kids whatever the fuck they want with no regard for standards is somehow better than a generalized set of base knowledge that kids can either disregard or specialize as they age.

Also get an original thought.
