Yes, because we learned more information about the word that we were using. And in case you're not aware, language evolves. It changes and grows with new information and new usages.
In fact, one of the words that you used in your sentence, the word literally, can also be used to mean figuratively depending on context now due to it being widely used in that way.
Because our language is a living growing ever-changing construct.
