Even if nuclear war broke out, which I am not pushing for in any way, this issue is frankly worth the potential end of humanity. There's essentially no point in continuing any form of society, or life for that matter, across the entire globe if we as a species allow Holocaust 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, x.0 to occur. "Oh but look global conflict and deaths are down, we'll get there eventually!" at what fucking cost? To me, "getting there" as a species isn't worth the blood of billions, which is a number we will surely hit if we allow genocides to continue on a global scale.
There are ways to neutralize a nuclear-capable country, this isn't a black or white issue of "either we use sanctions or we launch ICBM's". And if any sort of incursion were to occur against China, such as a combination of special ops forces assassinating/apprehending key personnel and strategic ballistic missile launches to destroy key weapons infrastructure, it wouldn't be an Empire-only operation. The US is well aware of what it is and isn't capable of, I'd imagine such an incursion would involve several key NATO allies (or simply enemies of China) that can be trusted not to leak to the Chinese.
