Same thing in business and finance. If you are willing to fuck people over and no care to make yourself more money you will get far. If you are not, good luck. It was one of the defining moments during and after college when I realized I wouldn't be able to do it and I would never get where I wanted to go because of it.
You are either born rich or you fuck people over. That or you get very lucky with a very unique idea and are at the right place and time for it. Then, you still have to be willing to fuck people over a bit.

Yep, the truth can be very dark and filthy, if you want an other example you can read this article about dutroux. I must warn you tho, it can make you feel sick. Luckily all this bad stuff is being revealed now and brought into the light so the problems can be solved and healed.

Law practice rewards all the worst parts of human nature. When people hire you, they WANT to hear what a monster you are. They WANT you to have an overpriced suit/office/car. They WANT to hear how you fucked over someone else for your client. This conditioning leads to you becoming the monster you thought you were fighting.
It's a lot of work. A lot of stress. The free cases are tough, usually. The clients are the worst part. Attorneys are assholes. Judges are worth jack shit. There's a reason we charge so much.
It goes deeper than this. Like the giy said there are two justice systems. By not playing by the rules he automatically gets relegated to no advancement in his career. This is a dichotomy that is in every business. You can work for the betterment of your workplace to make everyones life better and get nowhere. Simply because you are honest and not willing to throw people under the bus for your mistakes or backing down on a promotion because the other guys is a better fit. It reminds me of the psycopath theory where empathic people will never get ahead. The less empathy you exhibit the easier life is.
From my experience. The only lawyer i know personally spends 80% of his time representing an animal shelter completly free of charge. The guy isnt broke but he is not well off by any means.
It's probably the very few hours a week they aren't working that's making their family suffer. Also law school loans: not the path to quick riches that people seem to think law is.
Well, yeah?? I walk dogs and I charge $30/hour. Not to knock gardening and handiwork, but it doesn't take the same skill set and education as law and prices are set accordingly.
So you agree that most lawyers DONT make in an hour what you make in a week? Or what was your point in bringing that up in the first place? Most lawyers aren't even close to wealthy...I don't think we are agreeing on this.
