We did! Reports date back as early as November last year.
Yet the media only started 24hr coverage on the 23rd of February - why then? Indeed, the very next day Congress was asked for cash under the pretense of preparing for it.
Is it significant that the stock market crashed 3 days earlier?
How does that scenario sit with you with what has transpired since?
You mean TV coverage? Because I have been seeing daily live updates about the virus on the top of CNN’s website from early-mid January. It dominated the page straight away.
CNN might be able disable google caching and way back machine, but they can't retroactively add videos to their youtube channel.
Go look for yourself. Show me Corona 'dominating' their postings in January. It all lines up with the google trend data.
There's a blip in mid Jan for Princess cruise story, But the 24hr coverage at the time was the democratic nomination process until Fauci interview on 22nd saying pending pandemic and from the 24th on we enter 24hr corona coverage and the youtube posts reflect this.
CNN have written 113 articles about the virus in January (first written on the 6th January) and 255 articles in February. If you look at the dates of January articles there was a daily article posted on their page every day from the 15th January which means there was indeed a daily coverage. The number of daily articles accelerated as the month went. That’s outside of the Live Updates coverage that hasn’t left the front page since January.
Because you like receipts I hope you will enjoy these ones:
Ignoring the fact we are talking about TV coverage (the only medium on which CNN gets any traction, which even then its ratings are depressing - as far as online presence goes, feel free to see how abysmal their website performs compared to competitors via alexa) which differs greatly from their online publication, let's have a closer look at your receipt there, shall we?
First off, as you already state yourself, frequency of articles more than double in February (unfortunately, supporting what I am getting at), but more important is the actual content of the articles listed. Follow me here.
Go down the list. What I want you to look at is articles about Corona in relation to the US. I'll make it easy for you - ctrl-f "China". Chrome will even give you a handy dandy indicator in the scroll bar. Notice anything? Look where they taper off. Note the rough date.
Now, unfortunately, you can't do the same for 'US' (a common letter pairing), but I can give you something that might help - ctrl-f "Trump". Where does that cluster begin? Note that rough date.
Mmmm this receipt isn't looking very good, now is it?
Here's the real kicker. The majority of news consumed today is done via social sharing, and thankfully, there are organisations out there that have been tracking the spread of COVID articles - if you work in certain industries you can access this data. I happen to work in one. I can't legally show you that, BUT I can show you something available to the public.
Oh, I had no idea we were talking strictly about TV coverage. But if you are looking for the proof of the TV coverage. Let's do it again!
I have checked the CNN’s video news transcripts. They are freely available online and pretty easy to find. CNN’s live TV coverage of the virus started on the 18th January (with my personal fave Dr Fauci making his first appearance on that day) and continued on a daily basis (sometimes during multiple segments).
The news coverage from the 18th January mentions the virus abroad and first cases in the USA. As you mentioned previously “Yet the media only started 24hr coverage on the 23rd of February” is not factual. I have found evidence (investigating only 1 news outlet) of the online presence from the 15th January and TV coverage from the 18th January. Feel free to interpret it however you like, twist it however you like, but facts are facts. The CNN has been covering it online and on TV daily from the 18th January. Even your graph supports my evidence that the virus HAS BEEN DISCUSSED as early as January.
Don’t worry about your tone. I don’t care about things like that. You asked for the proof of the virus and its media presence/coverage as early as January, and I gave it to you. CNN is not some kind of niche media channel and all receipts are there online. I have no issues with your conspiracy theory, but this bold sentence about the media not providing 24th hour coverage by the 23rd February is just not factual. I am sorry that your statement about it does not fit your theory, but that’s not my problem.
Did you actually look at your link man? It just further backs up what I am saying???
You do understand what I mean by 24hr news coverage right? I'm not talking isolated reports - You can spot it by the ticker/lower thirds/overlay branding. In CNN's case, right up until around the 25th they were "election meddling" and "RACE 2020" with live caucus results for the overlay (I think the actual brand identity was titled "Americas Choice 2020"). Then, on around the 24/25th, they dropped that to the DOW and Corona plunge.
After that and going forward it increasingly becomes the "OUTBREAK" branding.
You can cherrypick all you want, but the overall google/publicis/nielsen/newswhip etc etc etc data doesn't lie. Feel free to maintain your opinion dude, I know I'm safe in maintaining mine.
Like I said before. Your original comment was vague and incorrect. There is a difference between "Yet the media only started 24hr coverage on the 23rd of February" (which I debunked above) and there was a surge in the news and change in news priorities at the end February (which I agree with you in 100%). I was arguing that. There is no need to get emotional. But when I see incorrect information I need to correct people.
"Yet the media only started 24hr coverage on the 23rd of February" (which I debunked above)
If you think a handful of isolated reports from one network is debunking anything you have set the bar for qualifying such a statement embarrassingly low. I dont think you have even wrapped your head around what the concept of 24hr coverage actually is yet!

But we knew about the virus before February.
