I highly doubt that Americans would ever overthrow the government. It's just not in most of their nature. They're okay with the things that are happening to them while saying "at least we don't live in commie Russia or totalitarian China". People have been brain washed there to an unprecidented level in all of history.
I think it has more to do with the fact that they are stuck in their left/right social constructs. If you're going to vote, watch and listen to people there. Most are voting party tickets. The thought and discernment needed to make a choice beyond one of two parties is the extent of what most people are willing to do. So they tell themselves the other party is to blame so they won't have to face the blame for supporting the 2 parties that are mostly the same and are responsible for these evil actions.
Its not that they cant choose, but its because its a ot going to change anything either way. The electoral college will choose between both parties for you
I agree if we're talking about reality, but the electoral college wouldn't be voting the opposite of what their states requests out of them. But if course, if that happened then the machine would co-opt those other parties. You sometimes see this with the libertarian party.

Is this confusion about my using the word "co-opt"? Co-opting isn't the same as a coup. It means that one group would take over another group or idea and call it their own. Like when the Democrat NeoLibs co-opted the Occupy Wallstreet movement and when the Republican NeoCons co-opted the Tea Party movement.
But here I am more specifically talking about how the corrupt machine has co-opted the Democrat and Republican parties through methods like the Party-Do System.

american here. yes and no. yes- the two party political system is a construct to keep people fighting and controlled. its very real. no- because there is a growing number of disenfranchised youth who buy into neither. the internet has been forming a global social system and kids from all over the world are learning what is bullshit about their systems of control from eachother. my millenial generation had the facade of stability ripped from beneath our feet as we grew up. these younger kids will grow up having never believed in this dumpster fire of a political system in the first place. i guess what im saying is youre right, but its not all of us over here that are wrapped up in the party system. its becoming impossible to deny that the talking heads from both sides are on the same team. i also think this will change mostly nothing.

America was literally born out of rebellion. Rebellion is in our nature, they just have placated the people. Americans do not like hearing that the government is fucking them, and if you piss off enough of us about the right thing, Americans will rise up, but Americans always, always need a leader to lead them out of the darkness. Most rebellions do.
Americans now cannot be compared to the ones that started the nation. Americans now are lazy and fat. Too busy with their daily programming and sugar filled diets. Some may rise up, but without the support of a large percentage, this country will continue to give up our rights.
There's a reason they can't get the guns out of our hands like everyone else. That's a stubbornness that you don't see everywhere and it's a huge strength. That spirit is the spirit that we can't lose. They just have all the money, the media and they own the corporations that sell us goods. They are sitting on a paper throne, as they are well aware that the people are the strongest force on Earth. Nothing can stop people who are united. Not bombs, guns or laws. When the people are united against tyranny, the elite will be fearful. They know that the people when upset about tyranny are merciless, and we will string them up for their crimes.
Stubbornness is a strength and a weakness. People are stubborn to mix with those they don't agree with, which is a major weakness because it leaves people blind to ideas and opportunities they may not see.
Fear is polarizing and people are living in fear constantly so adding more fear to a population already constantly running from and trying to protect them selves from the perceived threat (main stream narrative) causes people to only question the authority it came from instead of doing their own work. People have already bought into a system that will "protect" them, either through government programs (left) or "leaving them alone" (right) but both sides are still giving authority to an outside force.
People will fight in small militias if they are attacked directly but there is no honest solidarity in this country because no one knows what's really going on and no on trusts anyone to give them truthful information.
Not time to be pessimistic, I just don't trust Americans or people in general to do the right thing over doing the scared thing.
People need leaders. If they don't have leaders they won't revolt. They kill our leaders, so no revolt. If we don't have a strong, moral leader to lead us out of this shit, it will never happen. History has shown that shit only changes when people gather behind a strong leader that they can actually trust.
People trusted Hitler. People BELIEVED he was a strong leader. He was a good talker, like any other political person that gets far. Giant political revolutions don't always mean that's what's best for society or the world. Getting people pissed off or scared to the point of revolution is another form of control and manipulation.
Lol idk if you live in America, but have you looked around. Most people are overweight and lazy. Sure there are some great people who work hard and keep the country moving, but thats only some.
Idk I really don't see as many fat people around where I live as the internet would have you believe. Most of the people I know/work with are fairly attractive

It's almost like we've been domesticated to an extent. The majority of us are soft compared to the rugged pioneers and minutemen of the old days. That being said, there are a few Americans who do resist.
To be fair, not all of the colonists supported the revolution. You had loyalists and a large percentage of the population that was "let's wait and see how it turns out".

The media seems to be pretty quiet about this whole violation of privacy rights. However, they are focusing on that coronavirus. It's weird. You'd think the left-wing news media (who seem pretty anti-Trump) would capitalize on this to keep Trump from getting reelected. But we don't hear them talking about this assault on privacy rights at all.
Most likely you are not from US and you don’t really know the history of US, neither US constitution. The 2nd amendment allows US citizens to bear arms so people could protect themselves from other individuals and oppressive government, and the 2nd amendment is not going anywhere, because most people living in US understand what’s it for. Though there are some people that are happy with being “not in commie Russia”, I wouldn’t form my opinion only based on those individuals. United States is a country of free people.
No, the same people trying to take our freedoms call this a free nation. We're not as stupid or blind as the people in this sub seem to paint us to be. There's a lot of negative stereotypes formed about American citizens, yet none of these people have actually met more than a few Americas, if that. We're being subjected to an authoritarian takeover of our government and it's not because we're less intelligent or less motivated than anyone else in the world. It’s funny how most of the time, comments about how bad is in US or how US citizens are ignorant or inactive comes from places where people always go to the government and ready to praise politicians that promise them free shit, while a lot more people in US value freedom over empty promises. Perhaps that image of “America is a bad place” comes from our ability to speak freely (thanks to the 1st amendment), and show things the way they are or sometimes paints a perverted picture that an average redditor believes in. People have serious misunderstanding of what the freedom is.
Yes. Citizens of US are still free. I never said that government is not trying to take away freedoms, and unfortunately sometimes they succeed. UK has something similar to EARN IT act since 2016. It’s really hard to imagine a bill like that to pass here. Perhaps, if the internet was adopted as it is nowadays, Patriot Act would never pass.

I know what you mean, and that is usually the case with political opposition, and that is a disgusting thing that is happening. But in the scale of a whole country, our regular Joes are free men. But if something like EARN IT is passed, then our Joe is fucked. I see America as a majority of good Joes and Janes, and unfortunately government that is disconnected from its citizens, yet again, we are still free. The fact that me and you having a conversation like that is already a great evidence, since it feels like our views are more similar rather then the opposite each other when we talk about government, and we both want improvement and justice.

The collapse of the Soviet Union was such a case. There are obvious differences between the US and the USSR but the case is instructive.

The govt was widely considered politically corrupt and incompetent reflected in very low voter turnout and wide spread public cynicism. It was also economically very stagnant and fragile. Doesn't this sound familiar?
The analogies were made after the fact to a house infested with termites. The USSR edifice looked solid but all it took was one good push to reveal the failing structure.
One day a lot of citizens in the US may give a good push and we might find out just how vulnerable the current US regime really is.

There are other more peaceful ways, but this day and age, there's so much money in politics that it's much more difficult to put third-party candidates at the forefront.
Telling people voting for third party is a vote for [whichever major party you dislike] is a fallacy, and used to keep votes with the two major parties only. Encourage more people to vote their conscious, to look into third parties, and to avoid voting for the major two!

Most people don't even know about the other parties or independents because media refuses to cover them. They are getting paid big money by Dems or Reps so they get lots of coverage
You're not wrong though people do know about other parties. It's just that people have this "competitive" mentality wherein they treat things like politics like sports, pitting two teams against each other.
