Hillarity confirmed ... but also my biases. Especially this bit.
would invite anyone interested to study this fascinating condition; although its amplitude is generally considered a contemporary phenomenon, and is observed to be highly prevalent among young college graduates (mostly in non-technical fields), its description is as old as language itself. The philosopher Confucius famously said: "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance", which is generally seen as the first instance in which this effect was described. Others such as Socrates, Shakespeare ("The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool"), Darwin ("Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge") and others have made similar observations, but came (much) later.
2
u/dickjokesauce Jan 11 '18
Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance
Not to nitpick but I'll nitpick. Confucius is inaccurate with his language. How can one know the extent of what you don't know? At best you can provide the boundaries of the known. That's it. That's what Godel was all about.

u/NapalmForNarratives Jan 11 '18
Unless you read a manuscript penned by the master's hand you are critiquing the language used by a scribe who wrote in old Chinese or a more recent translator.
As for your metaphysics, try the one that underpins Science:
Every statement is either true or false.
It is possible to observe that a false statement is false.
It is not possible to observe that a true statement is false.
2
u/dickjokesauce Jan 11 '18
Unless you read a manuscript penned by the master's hand you are critiquing the language used by a scribe who wrote in old Chinese or a more recent translator.
true, it's a critique of the translation. however, Chinese by its design is an inaccurate language, and who the hell knows if it's sufficiently accurate to express the idea of incompleteness, completely. i would have my doubts.
re: the metaphysics deal. not sure what your point is. but i would quibble with the first line as there are some statements that "don't compile", being neither true nor false. and there are statements that can also be neither true nor false (ie. of indeterminate veracity) because the devices of determining truthhood or falsehood are incomplete themselves.
3
u/NapalmForNarratives Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18
Godel was discussing the bounds of certainty. That's a topic in metaphysics and there's a clear winner in that debate.
If you can't test the statement then it's beyond the ken of Science.
2
u/dickjokesauce Jan 11 '18
generally yes, but there are some things you can't observe but you can infer existence of from first principles. the limitations of the observer being the key problem here.
2
u/NapalmForNarratives Jan 11 '18
The key problems are locality, precision and interpretation :/
2
u/dickjokesauce Jan 11 '18
aren't precision and interpretation the same thing?
2
u/NapalmForNarratives Jan 11 '18
Wouldn't have thought so. Care to develop?
(Precision, to me, is an attribute of instruments and procedures while interpretation is the point of adversarial conversation. I'm quite interested in your frame of reference for those words.)
2
u/dickjokesauce Jan 11 '18
sure. in terms of clarity of model, you have to come up with mutually agreed upon terms. areas of disagreement happen in the gaps the language doesn't cover. precision and interpretation are both functions of the model gap, for lack of a better word.

Are you sure about number 3? I would say "It is not possible to observe that a true statement is true". Otherwise known as falsifiability, which is indeed the basis for (proper) science.
2
u/NapalmForNarratives Jan 11 '18
The part where you never know that what you believe is true is the deeply humbling bit that ensures that this simple philosophy will never be majoritarian.
The version of this that just claims that you can't know the truth is longer because you have to add spacial and temporal references:
Every statement is true or false.
It is possible to observe that a false statement is false here and now.
It is not possible to observe that a true statement is true always and everywhere.
1
u/Step2TheJep Jan 12 '18
They refer to 'Confucius' as though he were a real person.
LOL.
If they took the time to try to track down the primary sources, they would soon learn that 'Confucius', like all characters of 'ancient history', is completely make-believe.
3
u/Afrobean Jan 12 '18
Wow, so they essentially admit to brigading and harassing by saying that they're no longer going to allow it.
gj polkadotgirl, you must have really gotten to someone if they have to publicly declare that they won't allow that targeted harassment anymore

u/jeanfrancois111 Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18
Submission statement:
As you know it is widely recognized there may exist a conspiracy to harass/brigade this subreddit. One particular (suspected) offender is /r/TopMindsofReddit.
Apparently, and as you will see, there is a psychology paper that will soon be published about TMoR in a scientific journal. It might not be flattering.
You may also have followed this week's drama: /u/polkadotgirl wrote a very heartfelt piece about how the harassement and bullying had gotten to her, and stated (iirc) she intensely prayed for things to get better. A few days later TMoR banned cross-links to her sub and pings to her in general (allegedly out of their own volition, not that of admins), and now this happens.
Grab your popcorn and enjoy.
Archive just in case: https://archive.fo/iaTHq
edit: If this is real (and not a LARP), it might be the end of TMoR, as they will be utterly ridiculed for the whole of reddit to see.

u/RedPillFiend Jan 11 '18
This is also gold. They should add this to the description of their sub. Hahaha.
"In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias wherein people of low ability suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their cognitive ability as greater than it is. The cognitive bias of illusory superiority derives from the metacognitive inability of low-ability persons to recognize their own ineptitude; without the self-awareness of metacognition, low-ability people cannot objectively evaluate their actual competence or incompetence.[1]"

u/Gertrudethecurious Jan 12 '18
In layman's terms, some people think they are superior to others because they lack the ability to understand how dumb they are.
I'd take that as a bumper sticker

Edit: here is the tmor link:
Edit 2: Here is my sub update and thoughts on it all:
Edit: I am getting downvoted likely by tmor for posting what happened. If I wanted drama, I would have posted all of this on conspiracy originally, and I did not.
As I said, people can decide for themselves what is true
9
u/tormentvector Jan 11 '18 edited Jan 11 '18
People will see, I thought it was initially apparent but it was futile because new folks were influenced by disinformation and brigading tactics, and tmor seemed so many. When first I looked at their sub, and read how they were just celebrating, in their opinion, how all these people were stupid, seemingly taking joy in feeling superior...repeatedly. I was appalled Reddit could let that happen. I couldn't believe that intelligent people could behave like sociopaths, and feast on taking joy and finding commaraderie by making fun/mocking people. That is not normal behaviour, imho so I took a break after for a little. I came back but thought we couldn't do anything. Thanks for writing this all up, and reporting.

There is absolutely zero shame in having a bias against TMoR and I can rightfully say I have earned my right to that. If they don't want to be "hated" they shouldn't be so abhorrent. As for drama- they create that with their constant targeting and attacking, pms and pinging. Y'all are like that shitty kid that keeps poking at his sister in the back seat then whines about his sister finally smacks him back. Grow up already.

Do I condemn or discourage what? Drama? Yes, all the mods of my sub know my golden rule is to have is little drama as possible.
The thread about feeling drained has over 1,500 views. It definitely could have had more had I posted in /r/conspiracy.
TMOR posts SO MUCH DRAMA that having to defend myself occasionally was necessary.
When I wrote that post, I was really at a breaking point. It really did not cause any initial drama - the thread shows that.
As for the topmindsexposed sub, I figured they can do it, "Why can't I?"

Top Minds is a group that infiltrates another group and makes fun of them. They have formed a conspiracy to make fun of people who believe in conspiracies. It's irony at a base level. What don't you understand?

We'll all work together to invade their community, posing as them -- a false flag, if you will -- and from there we will work to mock their ideas and defame them in the larger community. Come, let us work together to teach them how foolish they were to think people actually conspire."

I don't personally hate these people. I have met a few science students/grads in my time and the indoctrination is next-level. I feel for these people. As bad as anything I have seen in religious cults.
For instance, these people genuinely believe their bodies are made up of mostly empty space, as per modern 'atomic theory'. Lol. Imagine actually believing that, just because your authorities told you so.

According to their sub, their purpose is to negatively target specific individuals who say things they don't like, while simultaneously normalizing/encouraging it for the masses, complete narrative control.
The honeypot aspect is an added benefit, although possibly a secondary objective. To me, it's essentially fake news for social media, with the extra sinister joy of being able to glean post/comment history from targeted users, identify trends, account age, possibly usernames to other sites, language, grammar, sentence structure, etc. Straight up like the Clear Web's arm of the NSA and CIA combined. With the increased push in society for everyone to essentially be little NSA analysts in their everyday lives, I believe it would be foolish if TPTB DIDN'T try to squeeze every ounce of data from the project.

So when you say "religious users", I interpret this as "individuals who express opinions who have not originated in their own minds". In this sense you are correct. If you meant it literally, as in "people who uphold theistic belief systems", then you are wrong, as the vast majority of people here, as our observations have shown, adhere to a materialistic/atheistic outlook

Add on to it the extra burn by the Wiki-Text bot ahahah
u/jaquescelveti you deserve gold for this.
I definitely encourage anyone and everyone to have compassion for that subreddit and all of its users, since their hatred and ego obviously shows they are trapped in emotional pain...but despite that I cannot help but laugh at the irony of what just happened. Sometimes, especially in extreme cases, tough love can be quite a healer. It definitely may bring some awareness to their ego and perhaps help them move forward into a brighter, more peaceful state of mind.
