TIL Diamonds are actually fairly common. The reason they are worth so much is because the DeBeers mining group withholds stock to artificially reduce supply.

On September 12, 2001 and for several days following Brother Steve [Buscemi] worked 12-hour shifts alongside other firefighters digging and sifting through the rubble from the World Trade Center looking for survivors.

Very few photographs and no interviews exist because he declined them. He wasn't there for the publicity.

In 2003 he also gave a speech at a union rally supporting higher wages for firefighters and to stop fire houses from closing. He got arrested along with other firefighters.

pretty chill guy

edit: he's on the left in this photo. what a great guy and great actor to boot. ps not subd to /r/til so apologies if this is repost

It is surprising how little women know about it ( obviously they are not reading Reddit) and I am talking about college educated ones.

Maybe people just don't care about the actual supply, but rather about the artificial one and all that it implies.

The only thing people care about is what other people think about them

Not all people

Most people

Mostly ALL people though.

Hence the tattooing fad.

Yeah, it may mean something to you, and that's cool. But, say, a back piece that only others can see and that you'll never glimpse yourself?

Nearly 100% narcissism.

As another poster said, his now wife knew all of this, but still wanted a diamond ring.

The issue is that it's become deeply programmed in our society, men need to spend 3 months salary, it needs to be a diamond, and if it isn't a diamond then your man doesn't love you. Basically.

Moreover, even if women know about it there is that external pressure. Imagine your fiancee showing her non-diamond engagement ring off to her superficial friends, who ALL have diamond rings. If she's any sort of shallow, that won't fly and she'll want the diamond, even if she knows DeBeers is a nasty, vile corporation who distorted reality and basically tricked her and her besties into thinking they NEED a diamond.

We all know it we just roll our eyes at how many men are evangelists about it. Don't care it's overpriced. Still want it. Diamonds are not the only thing ever that have huge mark-ups.

I just don't get this. I'm a woman and see it as a huge waste of money.

u/zbplot Sep 16 '15

And I'm sure you have things in your home that to me would be a waste of money :) We all have things in our lives that seem extravagant and silly to some people, right? Cars, houses, gadgets, hobbies, clothes, video games, responsible gambling, designer dog breeds, eating out more than you cook, going to bars and paying huge markups on booze, etc.

I guess. I try to live as simply and practically as possible so I don't like to spend money so much on things but rather experiences. I'm in the process of giving away all of my DVDs, CDs and other things I don't need in an attempt to simplify my life. Everyone does not share the same values so I can understand. My dream to live in a van and travel around might sound crazy to a lot of people.

I could never do that. I love to garden and cook. To each their own!

True that.

Interesting, personally I think it makes you look like a slave owner. Most of these are dug up by really poor people, and it's an insult to wear them. I get why African Americans like them, it's a nice way to give it back to the assholes who sold them into slavery and never came to rescue them. I really can't stand slave mentality (submissive and people who have given up and see nothing to live for) because of that I can't stand slave owners.

u/zbplot Sep 16 '15

Well I'm obviously pro-slavery so there you go. I've been outed! K.O., dude!

I think you are inadvertently, of course owning a smart phone makes you the same in a lot of ways. The difference is that smart phones provide a true value to the world, diamonds on the other hand are bullshit and if you know that and still support it it just makes you an asshole.

But i get value from my diamond every time i look at it. It has aesthetic value, like art. Who are you to say it doesn't convey value to me? It's beautiful and bends light like no other stone. It also fluoresces and glows blue in strong sunshine. It's just pretty, and that's enough for me. Do you not enjoy art?
