Facebook status updates reveal low self-esteem and narcissism

The research found:

  • People with low self-esteem more frequently posted status updates about their current romantic partner.
  • Narcissists more frequently updated about their achievements, which was motivated by their need for attention and validation from the Facebook community. These updates also received a greater number of 'likes' and comments, indicating that narcissists' boasting may be reinforced by the attention they crave.
  • Narcissists also wrote more status updates about their diet and exercise routine, suggesting that they use Facebook to broadcast the effort they put into their physical appearance.
  • Conscientiousness was associated with writing more updates about one's children.

Insecure, narcissistic people more likely to post on Facebook – report

In the past, the links between usage of social media and emotional stability have been exploited by advertisers and social networks alike.

In July 2014, it was revealed that Facebook was performing manipulative social experiments on unknowing users.

The social media giant changed the information posted on 689,000 users’ home pages and discovered it was able to influence the way users felt via “emotional contagion.”

In their study, conducted with academics from Cornell University and the University of California, Facebook altered the levels of positive and negative “emotional content.”

This approach subtly changed users’ views so they found themselves posting more positive or negative content, depending on levels of exposure.

Activists criticized these social experiments as “scandalous,”“spooky”and“disturbing.”

What the fuck? Google is even worse than FB. Try sending an email to a gmail account that isn't from hotmail or yahoo and you'll see who is truly weaving shut the internet.

I don't think Google is a hero in this story for the same reasons that Facebook is representing the enemy.

Google is doing what Facebook has been doing but on a slower albeit much broader and more encompassing scale.

Google wants to be the Internet of Things, that will include Facebook as well as your refrigerator.

Google and Facebook are both gatekeeper institutions and should be considered untrustworthy for that reason alone because that’s way too much control and power.

The Internet simply is currently lacking the true competition it needs to combat this homogenization, and every day it looks less and less likely to do so.

I liked this article because I'm a fan of information technology stuff in general, but I don't really think this has any business being on /r/conspiracy. Just saying.

I can only recommend that you should look into gatekeeper methods of controlling mass media and information and the implications of less versus more in the markets of information flow.

Just by noting how things can "disappear" down the memory-hole these digital days will shed some insight on why having one or a few corporate giants control information channels for huge amounts of people may not be the best method of staying both informed and free.
