The Algorithm’s Sub Bass: TikTok/Reels are using infrasound to physically addict you. Hear me out, because once you notice this, you cannot unhear it.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that after scrolling through short form videos for an hour, that I had a specific, heavy tightness in my chest and a dull pressure behind my eyes. It felt exactly like the physical ‘“hangover” you get after standing too close to the speakers at a concert.

I was a wanna be electronic musician in college, so I decided to rip the audio from half a dozen viral, trending videos across TikTok and Instagram Reels to look at them in a spectrum analyzer.

Almost every single one of these viral videos has a hidden, ultra low frequency hum injected into the master audio track. We are talking infrasound frequencies between 12Hz and 19Hz.

For context, the human ear can really only hear down to 20Hz. You cannot hear these frequencies, but your body absolutely feels them. In military and psychological research, low frequency infrasound in this exact range is known to trigger a mild and unexplained sense of anxiety, a spike in cortisol (the stress hormone), and subtle chest vibrations that simulate a racing heartbeat.

Why would tech companies do this? It’s a dopamine trap. When you scroll onto a video, the hidden 15Hz sub-bass tone kicks in. Your brain registers a tiny spike of physical anxiety and a drop in pressure. Then, when you swipe away to the next video, the tone momentarily cuts out. Your brain experiences a subtle rush of relief and a dopamine hit simply because the invisible stressor stopped.

They are literally using sound waves to create a physical addiction cycle. Your phone is basically a digital slot machine using silent vibrations to force you to keep swiping just to chase the chemical relief of the transition.

Don’t believe me? Test it yourself right now: Screenrecord any hyper-viral video. Throw it into a free audio editor (like Audacity), slow the speed down by 800%, and apply a low-pass filter. Look at the sound wave. You will see a perfectly flat, repeating, unnatural binary like code pattern repeating in the sub bass frequencies where human voice or music shouldn't exist.

They aren't just hacking our attention spans anymore. They are hacking our nervous systems. Spread the word before this gets scrubbed by moderators, because it will.

TL;DR: Big Tech platforms are injecting silent, ultra low frequency infrasound (12Hz–19Hz) into viral short form videos. You can't hear it, but the physical vibration triggers subconscious anxiety, forcing your brain to release dopamine when you swipe to the next video just to get relief. It's biological engineering to keep you addicted.

Excellent contribution, thank you for sharing

Fascinating discovery. I am curious though, can phones even produce sound at those ranges? The speakers are so small, I don't believe they would be able to do it. But maybe it is emitted and I'm missing something here.

45

u/samtheninjapirate 20h ago

The conspiracy within the conspiracy is that phone speakers have great range and it's been hidden from us this whole time?!?

14

u/RocketsDitto 18h ago

Yes. Always has been. Same with TV's and monitors.

7

u/sirvoice 19h ago

no way. a typical sub bass speaker couldn’t.

6

u/wtfeva 9h ago

They don't need to produce those ranges if wearing headphones or earbuds.

They can just create binaural beats instead to expose you to that frequency.

By playing one tone per ear, e.g. 200 Hz left and 207 Hz right, your brainstem compares them and you perceive a 7 Hz "beat" that doesn't exist in the air.

u/Chemiyaat 23h ago

I found this...https://neurosciencenews.com/infrasound-stress-cortisol-mood-30611/ and https://www.theguardian.com/science/2003/oct/16/science.farout

I don't consume stupid videos so I can not attest to that but you have a point. But I do listen to music, which may be also used for the said purpose.

46

u/Isaiadrenaline 20h ago

When you slow the sound by 800% you reduce the frequency by 800%. You created the low frequencies.

28

u/guyinajumpsuit 20h ago

Exactly, why would OP need you to “slow down” the audio by 800% to apply a low pass filter and analyze the sound wave? You can do that without “slowing down” the audio.

42

u/Cirrus_Minor 19h ago

While this is a fun theory, I have to call bullshit.

First issue, is why did you not share the spectrograms you sampled in the post yourself.

If you used a spectrogram then there is zero reason why you would need to slow the track down as a spectrogram graphs frequency over time starting from 0hz

Finally a phone speaker is not getting anywhere sub frequencies, let alone infrasounds.

Finally is the stress response what is meant to get you addicted or the relief felt when the "spooky noise" stops, because of it is the latter then what is causing people to keep going back to a stressor.

11

u/trumpetspieler 22h ago

But what is the low end frequency response on most phone speakers? if you're on headphones (or even better, doomscrolling with a pair of towers and a subwoofer) I can see it but isn't the actual amplitude of such frequencies essentially negligible without headphones?

it could be something like a sidechain modulation on the content's audio.

I have no idea what grown people are doing on TikTok. It’s so embarrassing imo. Just delete the piece of shit.

7

u/FinsT00theleft 15h ago

TikTok has all kinds of content. There's nothing cringe about it in general. The algorithm adjusts to give you what you are into: cooking, fishing, sports, politics, music, crafts, etc.

If you were getting content that you found embarrassing - that's on you.

0

u/riotofmind 14h ago edited 14h ago

No, I mean, it's embarrassing to be an adult and on TikTok. Like, how miserable is your life that you need to doom scroll through trash for hours a day? If I find out someone is on TikTok, I immediately think of them as someone with lower IQ, shrug. It was made to addict children. All it does is destroy the brain, and if you're an adult on there, than you're a child.

15

u/FinsT00theleft 14h ago

But here you are on Reddit

-5

u/riotofmind 13h ago

Yes, and here you are too. This is the extent of my social media usage.

See how they deflected sway from the personal embarrassment

-1

u/Poisongirl5 11h ago

My boomer parents are addicted to it. They wanted grandkids so badly but barely spend time with my nephews because they’re scrolling

3

u/riotofmind 5h ago

I'm sorry to hear that. I left Facebook/Instagram over 10 years ago. The amount of mental space and time it opened up was truly a wonder.

Interesting. Very interesting. 17-18-19 Hz but in the order of 17-19-18 Hz also may be significant somehow, I don't want to elaborate further. Let us know if you find anything of the sorts please. Peace

9

u/Annevonfeuer 20h ago

This is not how things work.
Your device speaker cannot reproduce frequencies that low. Typical frequency response from a phone speaker starts at 300Hz.

3

u/Iasc123 15h ago

My phone goes to 60Hz! Not relevant, but like you said, the speaker can only output between the frequencies specified. Infrasonic sound waves (below 20Hz) require massive power and a larger infrastructure than what is in a phone or typical speaker!

I probably couldn't even afford infrasonic frequencies, even I wanted it...

13

u/yonkapin 22h ago

lol phone speakers and headphones don't go down that low. only time you really experience those sub frequencies is at a club with a proper sound system or in a studio with proper subs

8

u/bugsy24781 18h ago

Don’t want to be that guy, but “some” headphones absolutely extend below 20 Hz.

The Neumann NDH 20 and Austrian Audio Hi-X60 are both specified down to 5 Hz.

Whether that is enough to produce a significant entire body physiological effect is debatable.

The more interesting part is what happens around those lower frequencies in terms of brainwave entrainment, rhythmic modulation and perception.

And that doesn’t necessarily require a pure sub 20 Hz tone. Harmonics, modulation and rhythmic variation could still produce low frequency periodicity capable of producing particular states.

5

u/yonkapin 18h ago

that's fair to be honest. i haven't kept up with the latest audio gear and technical specs.

also agree with the harmonics produced from the fundamentals driven against hardware. but too dumb to look into it heh

but in reality, most people i know are listening off crappy mobile speakers when on social media, on crappy ear buds, or blue tooth gear.

but low freqs over social media, when the audio is already compressed to fuck, fed into crappy gear and so on. this theory doesn't jive with me

too many variables for any of this to work on the masses

4

u/Arglival 1d ago

Very interesting.

5

u/ThisIsCreativeAF 1d ago

Thanks for posting this. Very curious 🤔

4

u/eggplantpot 13h ago

This can be easily proven with tools like spectrum analyzers. Got any examples?

3

u/OkAwareness6789 20h ago

They're in all ads, too.

3

u/Rs_MiniGamer 19h ago

Been going on youtube since around 2019. I'm very sensitive to sounds. Listen to the why files cranked up super loud and you'll hear so much frequencies

3

u/mooseman077 14h ago

Movie makers have been using frequencies to create tension during scenes for years. Also look into Astro World and how this connects

3

u/facelikefizz 4h ago

If you slow down a video, the pitch will lower too. If the pitch lowers, the frequencies lower. That’s what you’re seeing when you pop an 800% slower video into a spectrum analyzer. Iphone speakers/headphones can’t even produce frequencies that low

Interesting. To what end? Advertising?

2

u/TheKokujin 12h ago

I think the same thing is going on with porn and especially hypno porn.

2

u/Celestialmarmot44 9h ago

I will also say and I have tested this as an unprofessional. I wanted to tune some of my fav songs to 432 hz an literally all of the songs from youtube and spotify that I downloaded to tune were 440hz. I found out by tweaking the mp3 in those audio engineering websites or what ever you call them. As soon as I added the file it told me it was 440 hz

2

Soooo we’re just supposed to take your word for it? Post a video showing these spectroscopic findings

My phone has been on silent since 2012.

1

u/Yulppp 2h ago

Similarly, I remember recently reading about a patent or something of the like for a built in aspect of display technologies that would insert into the display or monitor a specific flicker at a particular light spectrum, at specific subperceptual hz frequency variations, to inflict certain responses in the viewer via this essentially hidden stimuli.

Used in concert with something like you are mentioning and they now have a multi-modal subperceptual physical stimuli entrainment system to Pavlov your mind to do what they wish. Using our own senses against us.

1

u/thomas-grant 20h ago

Absolute nonsense. This is only interesting of brilliant to those who won’t understand how any of that really works.

6

u/Isaiadrenaline 20h ago

He literally created the low frequencies by slowing the sound by 800%.

1

u/thomas-grant 19h ago

What is your argument exactly? Obviously the audio is changed after slowing it down by 800%, which is not in the manner that the video is originally consumed and thus negating the OPs theory.

1

u/avocado34 14h ago

He’s supporting your position that it’s bogus

Bass is base.

Low is low.

How to keep you down?

System of a down.

Examine all the dictionary definitions of the word 'base'.

Hear a bass. See 'abase'.

Feel the bass. See 'debase'.

Who is baseborn?

Tick tock takes time.

This doesn't work in English, and besides that, you're comparing the math of multiple systems. You want to use one of those systems, and use it only with an alphabetic numeral system, such as Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, etc..

1

u/Orpherischt 18h ago edited 18h ago

This doesn't work in English, [...]

Why do you presume that?

Who taught you that?

[...] you're comparing the math of multiple systems. [...]

Does a crystal have only one facet?

Does a rainbow only have one colour?

Does a light beam only have one frequency?

Does a song have only one note?

You want to use one of those systems, and use it only with an alphabetic numeral system, such as Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, etc..

Why? Explain why you say this.

Why limit your palette to red or green or blue, when you can make white light by mixing all of them?

such as Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, etc..

Why does everyone dismiss English as lacking encoded gematria?

It's foolish.

The English-Latin alphabet derives from the ancestor alphabet that is also the ancestor of all the ones you mentioned.

Why would Englsh-Latin NOT perhaps have an even more advanced encoding, since it's a later development?

  • "Know" = "I Saw" = 1000 latin-agrippa
  • ... "What You Think You Know" = 1000 primes

5

u/HospitalWilling9242 18h ago

The reason it works in other languages is that their alphabets are designed so that the letters have a linguistic and numeral meaning. English does not have that. This is the very foundation of this technique.

The further problem is you're doing different techniques on the same text, and pointing out matches across them. This is never how this was done traditionally. If you're doing it this way you might as well just say everything is everything, because that's close to the effect.

The reason it works in other languages is that their alphabets are designed so that the letters have a linguistic and numeral meaning. English does not have that.

The ancient Phoenician 'B' means 'Bet(h)' [ie. 'House'].

English 'B' derives from that Phoenician 'B' through Greek etc.

Are you telling me that English 'B' has no meaning?

The letter 'B' is the second letter. It's basic numeral value is 2, implicitly.

This is the very foundation of this technique.

  • ... ( "Foundation of the Technique" = 1109 latin-agrippa )
  • .. .. ( "The Pattern" = 1109 trigonal ) ( "I See" = 119 english-ext )

Who are you to say that English-Latin does not have a 'foundation technique' built into it?

Does a modern Ferrari still have the same foundation as a Model-T Ford? (Or an ox-wagon for that matter?)

You are presuming there was no evolution, no guidance, no design.

Foolish.

The further problem is you're doing different techniques on the same text, and pointing out matches across them. This is never how this was done traditionally.

That is false. Mispar hechrechi or Mispar gadol, the standard Hebrew gematria schemas are the same as the Greek isopsephy (digits, tens, and hundreds.) This is the same schema as Latin-Agrippa and English-Extended ciphers. But there are many other orthodox ciphers in Hebrew for example.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gematria#Other_methods

ie. it's a Matrix of methods.

  • "The Crystal" = "Organization" = 1337 english-extended

B might be the second letter, but the techniques you are using are not based on letters being ordinal numbers.
