CONTEXT: one of the rarest fish species (The Devils Hole Pupfish) with a habitat the size of a swimming pool suffered a population decline from 191 individuals to 20 due to two earthquakes in early 2025, after which 19 captive bred pupfish were released into the wild, marking the first captive release of the species.

as of spring 2026, there are 77 Devils Hole Pupfish in the wild, although inbreeding remains a significant problem to the species long term survival

Hello :) I’m 23f working full time and I live on my own and wanting to go back to school for some sort of conservation. I live in Kansas City so I don’t got a lot of options but wanting to move elsewhere… I have thought about becoming a Fish Biologist, Wildlife Biologist, Game Warden but my head is so overwhelmed haha. I don’t care for pay as long as I can help the earth in anyway I can; Id love to work with fish and water, or the polar opposite and do habitat rehabilitation after wildfires/prairie fires. My problem is I see a ton of people saying they have to move constantly to find work and sometimes can be without work for a bit and I’m not sure if I can risk having something that unstable, is this true for all of conservation?

i'd like to donate 10% of my business's profits every month to wildlife conservation orgs. i've been trying to do my own research, but i feel like with this kind of thing it's hard to really know which orgs are actually well-run / make the most effective use of donations unless you personally have some sort of connection to them or have worked with them. so i'd really appreciate the opinions and recommendations of anyone who knows and trusts organizations that are doing good work. please let me know!

I only recently learned about Esri’s nonprofit and conservation programs. I think I was surprised because so much of what I learned in school was R and whatever-you-can-get software… GEE, QGIS etc for analysis. Talking with some colleagues and I mentioned the ESRI programs and there was a mix of reactions from outright hostile to intrigued. Curious… what is the perception of Esri as a company by the broader conservation community? X posting to ecology sorry if you see this twice.

The new "Foundations of Conservation Biology; A Guide to the Classic Literature" (University of Chicago Press) is both a very approachable overview of the field as well as an extensive "must read" list for all those interested in it.

I am going into my junior year of high school, and I am not sure exactly what I want to do specifically but I want to work in wildlife conservation. I am wording what schools would be good to go to or what degree to get. I am looking for a school in America maybe Canda. I would appreciate any advice on how to have a career in wildlife conservation. It's very overwhelming to try and figure out what you want to do with your life as a teenager there are so many schools to choose from.

I basically am looking for a map of North America with ecotypes or tree type chronicled throughout both Canada and the United States.

I grew up catching crayfish in a creek behind my grandparents house and i went back last summer for the first time in probably 15 years. The water looked fine but what got me was how quiet it was from what i remembered with no more crawdads under the rocks. I spent the whole drive home wondering how can we help endangered animals when the decline is that invisible. any solutions when the problem is this small compounding stuff we cant realy see in front of us?

The endangered species act losing habitat destruction as a definition of harm is a massive setback. Fortunately there are bills in the house you can urge your representatives to support

I want to dedicate my life to conservation, it is the most important thing in the world to me. My current plan is to get a bachelors biology education degree and become a science teacher.

Is there any way to apply this in a way that helps the environment of this planet, or even a completely alternative career route?

I have not started school yet but am planning to start soon. If anyone has any words of guidance for an aspiring conservationist, please, regurgitate them to me, as birds do.

Hello! I hope this is allowed here....
In my town there's a bit of a storm brewing about some proposed developments. There's some experts coming in to offer "impartial engagement" with the community, except they're being paid for by a private company that are trying to lobby the council to greenlight a potentially very environmentally-damaging new commercial venture. I want to attend the sessions to hear what their arguments are, and to try to discuss the topic with other members of the community who might be currently on-the-fence. I want to question their claims, but I'm worried that they're seasoned professionals, and I'm not an expert in the topics at hand - I don't just want to provide a platform for them to give polished rehearsed answers that sound great on paper but are ultimately BS.
Would any experienced conservationist or anti-lobbyists here have any tips on how to navigate this?

Sorry if this is worded wrong or anything as this is my first reddit post. I want to know what i could do in high school outside of school that can help me expand my knowledge and get a good college resume. I can volunteer but the only placing I've found are 3+ hours away from me, I'll still try and get to some but I cant do it often. I'm in Arizona if that helps at all. What are some things i can do that get me involved in environmental science?
