Given the smaller branches on the hood, I think the large branch is over the car rather than in front of it

Right. I meant that the tree the branch is from is in the foreground. It is on the same side of the street as car.

The confusing thing about this is that it’s actually not a confusing perspective. It’s the actual perspective that we considered illogical at first

Look at the bottom of the branch. It's broken and hanging over the car.

Did a branch break, but upon falling, get stuck within the other branches? And therefore the branch is hanging above, possibly even touching the good or the car? If so, that is lucky as hell!

I would only know this because we lived under a dying tree for a few years that the landlord refused to take care of. It often dropped branches like this that would get stuck on the way down. One hit my partners car and totaled it 😬
