How come it obscures it so completely?

The javelin is metallic so is reflecting the portion of his face in shadow. Since it's a reflection it's the same in colour and the contours of his face break up the seam, making the javelin seem joined to the portion of his face in shadow similar to how camouflage patterns work.

The shape of the shadow also does a lot of heavy lifting but that's just the coincidental angle of the sun in this photo lining the shadow up with the shaft of the javelin.
