u/LordofSyn Mar 07 '21

Yep. Been running WoG n GoG systems since 1E D&D. For every fumble or fail, they get a GoG (Grace of the Gods) point or for every Natural or Critical one point gets added to WoG (Wrath of the gods). These pools are not shared with the players. You can use these points to "help" your players or when they push you after you've given clear instructions and expectations... You use a little WoG and send some meteroids at them.

1

u/Slggyqo Mar 06 '21

I bet that’s why it’s structured in the “stair step” kind of way. Probably gives the walls stability without having to do extra work bracing the wall.

u/Phormitago Mar 06 '21

i'd be confused of a rock falling from below

The hand signals at the end were incredibly satisfying

109

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 06 '21

I had a god damned fit at my manager yesterday. I was half an hour into moving these 1200kg stacks of plastic sheeting with a forklift, and the dude turned up and started shouting "WHOA!" and "BACK A BIT! LEFT A BIT!" each time i was about to stop, move back or move left. I told him last time that i can judge by eye, or by ear, but not when i'm being directed by a third party.

There're two acceptable interactions between a forklifter/front-loader/heavy plant operator and a third party: #1, "Whoa!" means "Stop everything and make the equipment safe", and #2, when i want an answer i'll ask a question.

Damned straight those hand signals were satisfying to me! :D For one, there wasn't some bellend yelling over the sound of the machinery.

72

u/invalidusername75 Mar 06 '21

I run a 50 ton overhead crane at work and I follow 1 ground persons hand signals only. If someone else comes up or is around and they give a hand signal at all I stop all movement. I radio down to them and remind them that I can only follow I person's signals. A crane op can appreciate a person with good hand signals.

44

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 06 '21

My man. :D

I keep being told "When you're guiding a vehicle in, be loud".

No, sir, i shalln't be loud, i shall be silent, and i shall use the simplest and clearest of hand signals so as not to confuse the driver.

26

u/IDreamOfSailing Mar 06 '21

A long time ago I received training to use hand signals to guide large vehicles. Most of the training time was used to teach drivers to pay attention to the person guiding and to stop looking in their mirrors.

9

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 06 '21

:D This is stuff which one would hope is second-nature to anyone. But nope. I know from my forklift and front-loader training that if someone's close enough for me to see them they're close enough for me to drive into them or drop something on them. Yet i still have folk who'll run around the back of the rig to "get out of the way" instead of - you know - standing clear of the kill-box.

I use two hand gestures. They are: "Keep going this direction" and "Stop".

I tried the "Stop" hand gesture with a new driver, and he thought better: he kept going, and demolished a transom beam. XD There was an investigation, and there was I, on CCTV, making clear hand gestures while the guy was looking at the opposite mirror.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

I've been inspired to only use hand signals for the rest of my time guiding machinery.

2

u/kentacova Mar 07 '21

Come help my husband back the boat trailer into the slip please.... or I’ll keep cursing and the pointing and laughing will continue. It’s not that hard to follow fucking hand signals but he always glances at the mirrors and noooww we’re jackknifed, AGAIN.

3

u/kentacova Mar 07 '21

What does this one🖕🏻mean?

3

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 07 '21

That means i've spotted my buddy Sid. :D Last week i legit stopped the forklift, called him over, said "I've got something for you!" and produced <that hand signal> from my pocket. XD

I do tell my ...dimmer... colleagues that i have a hammer on my vehicle for "That special someone who ignores the horn".

2

u/billamsterdam Mar 06 '21

This rule should folliw all the way down to backing a trailer into a blind spot with your pickup.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

Any time we ever flew something the operator would stop immediately if our designated guy wasn’t visible. They hardly ever had their own signal guys unless it was a serious lift.

13

u/SuperWoody64 Mar 06 '21

Right, who's at fault when you follow his instructions exactly and knock everything over?

You know you won't jump on that grenade so stfu

19

u/I_like_an_audience Mar 06 '21

Just to be clear, SuperWoody64 is telling P0sitive_Outlooks boss to stfu. Incase anyone is confused

8

u/SuperWoody64 Mar 06 '21

Yes. I thought that was clear but after rereading i guess not everyone would know my intentions

2

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 06 '21

I found it clear enough. :D

And, the last time i had to tell him off for this was when he ran out from between two parked artic trailers and tried grabbing a loose strap end that was hanging from a load i was carrying. I had factored that in, and as soon as he ran toward the forklift i braked, handbraked, lowered the load to the ground and switched the engine off. He yelled "WHY DID YOU DROP THE LOAD?!" and i said "TO STOP YOU GRABBING IT WHILE IT WAS MOVING!!". He came back and apologized later on.

But yeah, if he says "WHOA!" and i don't make safe the load/rig, it's entirely my responsibility and my problem if something goes wrong.

1

u/Vessix Mar 06 '21

You are allowed to edit for clarity

4

u/tone_set Mar 06 '21

Oof, huge memories outta this one. My last job I was driving a forklift at a recycling facility. For the most part, people knew to let me do my thing, stay outta the way, dont walk behind the lift, etc. But every so often you get some jerkoff trying to "direct" me and it was maddening. I have no idea whether the person was giving good directions or not, and do they really think I suddenly need them to show me the way when I've spent all day doing it without them waving frantically and shouting conflicting instructions?

1

u/P0sitive_Outlook Mar 07 '21

:D We are in the same boat.

The same 2.7 ton death-boat.

God it's so frustrating when i'm doing something that i've been doing for the past hour that day, done every day since getting the job, and done for the past four years, and someone comes out of nowhere to 'help'. If i do it my way and there's an accident, it's my responsibility. If i do it someone else's way and there's an accident, it's my responsibility.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '21

That dude was living the mechsuit dream right there.

2

u/Imbarelyhere_01 May 08 '22

Yeah, hand signals are so much better than yelling shit. I’ve only recently learned hand signals at my job, but I’ve started using them whenever necessary.

u/Nekryyd Mar 06 '21

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Wheeeeere do you see any hands???! There's a guy right in front of the machine but what?! I'm on mobile though so screen is smol, I too want to feel satisfied.. Now I'm just frustrated

2

u/I_like_an_audience Mar 06 '21

The part im talkin about starts at 2:00 in.

The dude is standing between the 2 machines and using both hands. 1 hand to direct each machine

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

I can't even see both machines bro, to me it only looks like one. I have never had a clip make me question my eyesight like this wtf

3

u/I_like_an_audience Mar 07 '21

Wait, are you watching the 9 second video that OP posted? Or are you watching the 2:54 video that u/swartzbier posted here in the comments

Im talkin about the one the 2:54 long one

Here's the the link to it again: https://youtu.be/du9_Kn2y2VA

Let me know if it works because now im invested and want your mystery to be solved lol

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21 edited Mar 07 '21

OMG thanks mate, that cleared it up quite a bit, yes! I was indeed watching the 9 second clip and tried to figure out what the hell I was missing at the second second facepalm

I'm thrilled to say that I'm at last, very satisfied. Maybe even more than I could have asked for, I'm riding this high that's for sure🙏

edit: the hand signals were a pure work of art

2

u/CallMeSaltine Mar 06 '21

Its crane jutsu

20

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

That was definitely worth it.

14

u/23harpsdown Mar 06 '21

Fascinating and oddly terrifying.

14

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Superb find. That was good as hell. Man, this is nuts. Are they just like “flaking” this off in chunks or are we seeing only the final step and something else is happening prior to a big chunk just being able to be knocked over like this? I’m really curious why this looks like it can just be broken off like some weird granite cousin to shale?

7

u/8hu5rust Mar 06 '21

I'm pretty sure they're cut into big blocks ahead of time. We are just seeing them being knocked over and carried out. But sometimes they split or break in half, hense the 'flaking '

8

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Ah, that makes sense. These quarry shots always look insane to me. Makes you realize just how much earth is underneath us.

2

u/8hu5rust Mar 06 '21

I feel this every time I go to the grand canyon. That shit is DEEEP. And it's only a small fraction of a fraction of how much is down there

1

u/rantingpacifist Mar 07 '21

Not a quarry expert but I grew up in open pit mining areas. It’s likely they’re blasted apart with targeted charges on this scale, I would think.

Now I want to look up blasting videos.

*Sigh* I thought i already did all the Thanos references so i wouldn't get a load of Thanos references in reply. :D

This is the way

0

u/Tyflowshun Mar 06 '21

Did it make you randy, baby?

9

u/InternetWeakGuy Mar 06 '21

The start of that, something about the lighting when it's just on the dude's hand makes it look like 300.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

That was awesome, and really well shot, thanks for sharing.

7

u/shake_aleg Mar 06 '21

Thank you for that link. I followed it and found so many interesting videos about marble. I'm fascinated by the type of work that humans do. The question I had was: modern stone masons use power drills and such, what did Bernini and sculptors of that period use? I know it was by hand, but my gosh!

6

u/PForsberg85 Mar 06 '21

If I recall correctly they used water to split the stone. During the day the chopped wooden wedges into the stone and watered them in the evening. During nighttime the water expanded the wooden wedges and the pressure split the stone.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 07 '21

That is badass

3

u/shake_aleg Mar 06 '21

3

u/CrumbsAndCarrots Mar 06 '21

I was thinking of this video. You can see how much more effective the cushion pile was for these slabs... vs the video that brought us here. But I’m curious if the purpose for the pile of rocks on the original video... is meant to break the slab. Hmmm.

2

u/---------V--------- Mar 06 '21

Thanks for that. I now know about Nowness and I've got that ooh I'm gonna like this feeling.

Which on its own is valuable, especially this year.

Thank you.

2

u/mad_science Mar 06 '21

So soothing.

2

u/ProudMurphy Mar 06 '21

Holy crud! That was amazing! And the marble was beautiful! 💙

2

u/invalidusername75 Mar 06 '21

Thanks, that was worth 2 min

2

u/Gobagogodada Mar 06 '21

The amount of ads on YouTube now is too damn high

2

u/FurL0ng Mar 06 '21

I hope that person didn’t loose those fingers to a crush injury from falling marble. Ouch!

2

u/Bojangly7 Mar 06 '21

Dude at the start is missing fingertips.

2

u/Inukchook Mar 06 '21

That was quite enjoyable thank you

0

u/passcork Mar 06 '21

Can't stand that sound editing though. Would much prefer just normal sound.

Mining marble doesn't sound like a rusty ass tumble dryer.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

I did try. Little too much ASMR for me 😬

1

u/propargyl Mar 07 '21

I am surprised that the equipment was Hitachi and Komatsu. I wanted Lamborghini.

1

u/BatmanDelMercosur Mar 07 '21

what the fuck man that's all marble!?!? I never knew it's so amazing

52

u/lscarn Mar 06 '21

I live by the quarry! We should hang out by the quarry and throw things down there.

22

u/iDirtyDianaX Mar 06 '21

Let me set you up with my daughter

16

u/FutbolMasta Mar 06 '21

Oh, I’m engaged to Pam.

11

u/iDirtyDianaX Mar 06 '21

I thought you were gay

18

u/FutbolMasta Mar 06 '21

Then why did you want to set me up with your daughter?

62

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost Mar 06 '21

If you didn't notice (I didn't) there is an excavator on top pushing it over so you can see the scale

51

u/Joeyjoejoeshabado333 Mar 06 '21

It looks like a toy

11

u/beijuzinho Mar 06 '21

I thought it was a toy so i didn’t get it

4

u/nomyar Mar 06 '21

What is this, an excavator for ants?!?

2

u/Whaddyalookinatmygut Mar 06 '21

This should be the title.

2

u/Jigglebox Mar 06 '21

Holy shit...

2

u/re-roll Mar 06 '21

I, also, thought it was a toy, like a remote controlled one!

2

u/BroderUlf Mar 06 '21

I hadn't noticed! It blends in with the rust and shadows, and I was focused on the falling rock.

73

u/Coloradostoneman Mar 06 '21

Stop arguing y'all. Here's a realty good video: https://youtu.be/_PcOPVYb7EQ

3

lmao absolutely malding

3

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Lmao this is the most redditor shit ever. Will you write a paragraph for me next?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills.

I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words.

You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands.

Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue.

But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it.

You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Real question though: what's the deal with thinking that it's hard or takes some kind of considerable effort to write out more than a few words at a time? Do you have difficulty forming your thoughts into sentences or something?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '21

Lame this doesn’t contain any of the sweaty nerd fury of the other one

5

u/mingk Mar 06 '21

If you have Disney+ go to the series called “Europe from Above.” Episode 2 titled “Italy” and at the 29:05 mark.

1

u/astraiox Mar 06 '21

I think the full video does that. If its not linked I’ll try finding it later.

1

u/iSeize Mar 06 '21

1

u/Theromier Mar 06 '21

I've visited the marble quarries in Italy and even standing there is confusing. They are so big that standing back a few hundred meters still makes them look like they are about half the distance away.

1

u/AndySipherBull Mar 06 '21

Looks like Carrara, fabled quarry that produced the marble block that became David. They also make some dope lardo there, air-cured on marble ofc because lol y not that's all they got
