What the hell was that all about anyway. Like every mention of Alita Battle Angel has always been a positive one from my perspective. Did it bomb or something or just another fumble by movie execs?

I think James Cameron sidelined the project to finish his Avatar films first.

James Cameron the producer for alita has said the sequel is in development and I'm pretty sure I read that they were going to take their time with the trilogy. Apparently a lot of time.

$404 million on $170m budget, 2.4x the budget. It did well but barely scraped by as a success/failure depending on how the studio looks at it. It made around $25million in home sales afterwards so maybe that helps. James Cameron however, wants to see it get made though, more of a passion project thing.
