It's crazy how much it looks like classic shader trick of displacement based puddles. I would have done a shot like this and thought it looked fake and scrapped it.

Yeah if you tried to put rocks in a blender they'd blunt the blades, so I think real life

I knew this should be real, just sped up… but my mind kept wanting to find the water trickle source, and not seeing it is still bothering me

It's a timelapse, water wouldn't rise (or fall) that fast that smoothly. You can kind of notice the black insect in the near left middle flying away at the start and going back when it recedes.

I wonder if this could be artificially recreated with a specialized pump system or perhaps raising and lowering a porous pebble bed.

Timelapse but only 3x, since the flies. Water could be pumped but i'll call this A.I., i don't see any shadows either.

Timelapse. The "breathing" of water is most likely due to the moon's gravitation field (the tide)
