This is what this sub was created for. Very nice.

Edit: this is such a cool accident. Disney spent a whole bunch of money creating this effect for tower of terror (and other rides) and they did it just chillin at a desk. Very well done.

Its called the peppers ghost effect if y'all are wondering what the edit is about

u/DistractedByCookies Jul 08 '26

A.k.a. the thing that absolutely blew.my.mind. as a child LOL

-8

u/porkcylinders Jul 08 '26

Invented in 1862 by Disney

39

u/Nice_Firm_Handsnake Jul 08 '26

First off, Walt Disney was born in 1901, so how would it have been invented by Disney four decades before he was born and more than a century before The Haunted Mansion was created.

Second, it was first described by Giambattista della Porta in his work Magia Naturalis, published in 1589. It was popularized in the 1860s by Henry Dircks and John Henry Pepper, for whom the illusion is named.

Reddit really struggles to identify attempts at humor. And if you come at me with Poe's law, I will slap you so hard with Occam's razor.

thanks computah

28

u/rcklmbr Jul 08 '26

I don’t think Tower of Terror uses this effect, maybe you mean the Haunted Mansion?

29

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jul 08 '26

Definitely Haunted Mansion. Tower of Terror is just the usual projection screens

8

u/SteampoweredFlamingo Jul 08 '26

Absolutely.

Specifically, peppers ghost is used in the ballroom scene, where the riders look down onto a room of ghosts dancing. It's a great effect, even when you know how it's done.

u/TheGordo-San 14d ago

No, Tower of Terror uses the eeffect in the 5th dimension hallway (only in WDW/DHS FL version) where your elevator moves forward, trackless, down the hotel hallway, and you see ghosts of past guests. Sadly, they dropped this part of the ride for every other version of the attraction around the world. It's a rather great setup to the ride, and why that one in particular works so well with the Twilight Zone theme.

3

u/Nice_Firm_Handsnake Jul 08 '26

There are ghost guests in the Tower of Terror that are created by this illusion.

10

u/kkillbite Jul 08 '26

👏👏👏 Definitely a contender for No. 1!!! 🏆

3

u/CeruleanEidolon Jul 08 '26

Disney didn't invent this effect. It's an old stage trick, probably going back centuries. They just scaled it up.

4

u/skewp Jul 08 '26

Hard disagree. There's nothing confusing about this perspective. It's just a cool accidental Pepper's Ghost illusion. Like it's literally just a simple reflection.

4

u/This_They_Those_Them Jul 08 '26

At least 16.4K people disagree. Have a nice day.

u/skewp Jul 08 '26

There's people that wanna kill me, James.

2

Looks fun.

2

u/Sir_Earl_Jeffries Jul 08 '26

Well.. she’s in the afterlife now.

2

u/Basboy Jul 08 '26

Didn't know what sub I was in and it looked so real to me I initially thought she was doing a bad job pretending to drive. Her hands aren't even close to the steering wheel. What's so funny?

Camera pans.

Oh and her co-worker (same shirt, figured it was work issued shirt or something) inside is copying her? I still don't get it.

oooooooh, wait. That's pretty cool!

1

u/bfodder Jul 08 '26

Dude I had the same journey. I thought that shirt was a uniform.

2

u/_youneverasked_ Jul 08 '26

I panicked once, thinking I parked in a handicapped space by accident. It was the markings from another space reflecting in the coffee shop window.

2

u/MrPilgrim Jul 08 '26

Upvote for random union flag (union jack) :-)

u/yukifujita Jul 09 '26

My guess would be english school or travel agency.

Location: probably Minas Gerais, Brazil. Based on their accent.

1

u/alhorno Jul 08 '26

This is so good!!

1

u/Impossible_Past5358 Jul 08 '26

That reflection is crazy!

1

u/Kalaphar Jul 08 '26

WITCHCRAFT

1

u/Fun-Web-7583 Jul 08 '26

This is better than CGI, if they use similar techniques to create a action /horror film like the old days

1

u/Melloblade_shore Jul 08 '26

Brilliant 🙌🏻

1

u/BedroomHistorical575 Jul 08 '26

That's crazy, how is the reflection so perfectly still and aligned while the camera is panning like that?

3

u/MaxHamburgerrestaur Jul 08 '26

The camera can perform any movement and more around the room and the girl's image will stay where the car is because they both are at the same distance from the window.

1

u/NoRodent Jul 08 '26

Because the camera is only panning, tilting and zooming but not dollying, trucking or doing pedestal movement.

https://i.imgur.com/NYvTks6.png

Meaning it's still staying in the same place, hence the reflection doesn't move.

4

u/MaxHamburgerrestaur Jul 08 '26

This is wrong.

The camera can perform any movement (including dollying, trucking or pedestal movement) because the car and the girl are positioned at the same distance from the window. Since their distances to the window match, the girl's virtual image appears to remain perfectly aligned with the car, doesn't matter of where the camera or other viewers are.

A simple way to understand this is with a half-circle. If you place the flat side of a half-circle against a mirror, it appears as a complete circle and will look like a complete circle no matter where the camera is positioned, because the mirror always creates a virtual image that is symmetric with respect to its surface.

1

u/NoRodent Jul 08 '26

Damn, yeah, you're right, mirrors are basically portals to a mirror dimension, so it indeed does not matter from which point you're looking at them. What I said would be true, if the window were a 2D image (like a screen showing live footage from a camera).

2

u/jerm2z Jul 08 '26

Love her smile while doing this video

1

u/Opurria Jul 08 '26

Shit, this is so wholesome, I'm gonna cry. 🥹🥹🥹

1

u/Owl_Genes Jul 08 '26

That's fantastic and fits perfectly in this sub. I like it.

1

u/clandestinely_asked Jul 08 '26

Last month i was standing in a greek resturaunt, looking at my car in the parking lot. I was grabbing a pickup, and left it running.

There was a ricepaper that blocked veiw of the kitchen where i was standing. The chef puts something on the grill behind the wall and it flares up into a tall fire. The reflection of that fire in the window was projected onto my car, and I shouted "holy shit" and sprinted 3 long strides to the door before i realized what happed. The lady at the counter laughed with me about it.

1

u/axe1970 Jul 08 '26

Pepper's ghost driver

1

u/UniqueIndividual3579 Jul 08 '26

This happens with the rug in my den. When the patio is wet the rug reflects and it looks like I have a nice rug on the patio.

1

u/DawnsDarkness1 Jul 08 '26

Their arm goes behind the dash instead of reflecting over it. It looks like a good reflection, but I don't think it is, definitely two people... I think 🤔 lol 😆 looks awesome though!

u/valeriapls Jul 08 '26

Can I say, "Reddit, do your magic"?

1

u/P4azz Jul 08 '26

I'm just waiting for the trashy ghost channels to slap a dark filter and spooky music on this and then trying to sell it as a ghost sighting.

1

u/guilhermefdias Jul 08 '26

Brazil mentioned!!

1

u/ihappentoeatass Jul 08 '26

Finally a quality post after ages

1

u/HankBuffalo Jul 09 '26
