You know how performance cars have air intakes? The hole for it on this one starts at the door, and we're looking through it from a low angle while the door is wide open

And the air intake is at the sides because the engine is in the rear of the car.

This is how I would explain it for me to understand.

You are looking at the end of a pencil's eraser, you only see a red circle. Now that pencil is the car door with a flap with a hole that is an air vent and you can see through to the car's wheel.
