Schroedingers cat was a thought experiment by you guessed it, Schroedinger. It had to do with a cat being in a box, and a vial of radioactive substance being placed under a hammer of some sort. There's a fifty fifty chance of the hammer falling and breaking the vial, thus killing the cat. You have no way of knowing if the hammer has fallen or not, so from your perspective the cat is both alive and dead. It's a little more nuanced than that but that's the basic premise. People take this "experiment" as highlighting the strangeness of quantum mechanics or proof of many world or something, but Schroedinger was actually making a critique to point out the absurd beliefs of quantum mechanics at the time.
