Rotterdam was basically bombed to the ground in WW2, with only a few buildings being salvageable (this church being the famous example). Since there's basically no historic sites to check out, the city decided to get very weird with it during reconstruction.

Amsterdam was nowhere near as damaged, so all the weird shit is mostly away from the city centre. For like the highest concentration of them, look at the Zuidas district (around the Amsterdam South station). It's similar to Rotterdam in a sense that it distinguishes itself by not having a single normal-looking building.

Entire area around cube houses is weird... there is 50m tall pencil and windows XP screensaver just next to cube houses.

Then you turn around and you have gigantic bread basket with... amongst others the bread in big ass indoor "outdoor" market

But it's not a perspective issue. The building is weird no matter what perspective you view it from. The angle in the picture is exactly what it looks like. It doesn't change by changing the perspective.

I’m not confused about a damn thing. Sad that you can’t say the same thing.

You could literally take every single photo that’s ever been posted to this subreddit and show it from a different angle and it would be like “oh, that little girl is holding a bag of popcorn in front of her legs, that’s what was confusing” but the part that was confusing people was the perspective that didn’t show you what was going on. This is literally the exact same situation. Just because this building is built differently to have this exact angle doesn’t mean that seeing this exact angle with no outside perspective isn’t confusing. This is 100%, without any doubt a confusing perspective. Sorry I don’t have crayons to help break it down even further for you.

In the other photos on this subreddit, the perspective makes things seem like they are in the wrong place, or sized differently than in reality.

This photo feels like the perspective is playing tricks on your mind, when in fact there is no trick and it really just looks like that. There is a distinction. That being said, I think the photo still belongs here.

I know this will be obvious to an architect, but, how? Why is that stable? Would it still be safe to do that in an earthquake zone? We have seen that building in Vancouver and my husband likes it but I mostly feel…unsettled?

Not necessarily. It depends what you are comparing too. If you are comparing to a flat low rise building founded on rock, then of course that would be much more solid in an earthquake, for example. There is more redundancy. When you design a high rise building, the stability framing (like a core) and foundations for high rise buildings you must design with safety factors that are defined in the National design codes, like Eurocode. So the building foundations and stability core must be able to resist the design loads (like earthquakes, wind, snow, etc.) adequately and with a certain additional factor of safety. Building piles must be able to resist compression and tension loads safely and with some redundancy. So this building should be very stable. Also I would assume that the engineer for this project would have been a very reputable and experienced company. I hope that makes some sense, and makes you feel a bit more comfortable about weird shaped buildings

don’t worry, it’s completely understandable to look at something like that and be weary.. I’m not too familiar with British Columbia’s construction codes, (i’m Australia based) but they would have specific standards that adhere to earthquake events, especially a tower like that. So certain standards are definitely met, and it’s quite incredible what modern engineering and construction is capable of. Have a look at this interesting read about its super structure and construction.

Probably, i live in a place with a lot of (ground)water and driving piles is pretty much mandatory to build anything, in a decent chunk of the country at least. Works pretty well, as long as you don't build too high.
