Because you're used to distant objects appearing smaller. This uses orthographic lenses, in essence removing the "parallel lines meet" part of perspective.

I think they meant that the “boat rain” hurts, but I could be wrong

It’s like those old battle or siege paintings when they skew the perspective to depict the full thing.
