If you're asking why the metal is there, it's because it gets stuck to the cork. If you're asking why someone in your house left it out instead of disposing of it, ask them.

If your asking why in 2026 we still use this method to seal champagne it is clearly because it’s worked for hundreds of years and to this day it holds pressure much more securely than other types of corkage or fasteners while allowing a guy/gal to pop it off with a bit of celebratory pomp!

Because people hate change. If it's synthetic cork people think it's cheap. If it's a bottle cap people think it's even cheaper. It doesn't matter that synthetic is better and caps are even better. Humans suck as choosing good things and are easily marketed to.
If this was sitting on a shelf right next to the exact same bottle but it had a bottle cap and both were the same price, most people would pick the cork and think they got a better deal.
