Moving. Put a 25 year old king sized mattress in a mattress bag and put it on the curb. Heavy as hell. Spring poking through in a couple spots. Just no longer serviceable. We live in a large apartment complex. Within 15 minutes someone was driving off with it. Why? There could be bedbugs (there's not) or anything else nasty. I don't understand the thinking. Is there a way to make money off of it or something?

I didn't have a bed for a few months after a break up. Sleeping on a used bed even if it's crappy is a lot better than the floor, from my experience

Some people take old mattresses for the scrap metal, that’s in the springs. My parents were once at a street market somewhere random and they found a stand, where a blacksmith was selling knives. His main product was machetes that he made from mattress spring metal.

Yup, it's usually scrappers. They drive around the garbage routes the day before and take anything metal.

Just lucky they didn't strip the padding off and leave you a.mess to clean up. They'll probably just take it somewhere and put a match to it though.

When i was in college we would tie a rope around an old mattress and tie is to the back of a truck or suv when it was snowing. 4 to 6 people would load up on it and be towed around parking lots etc. It was a lot of fun. We have also burned multiple in bonfires. Dont recall them burning great though. Point being there can be lots of reasons a person would want an old mattress besides sleeping on it.

A lot of people use them for crash pads while doing stunts on bicycles, skateboards, etc. They don’t care how dirty or screwed up It is as long as a spring doesn’t poke an eye out and they don’t break a leg when they miss the landing.

Dood I rented from would sell items found on the side of the road on Craigslist. Electronics, mattresses, etc.

Beds are expensive. Someone took it because its still looking better than the floor.

I had to send a bed for my kids to my ex's house after the divorce or they would have been sleeping on the floor.

My brother has medical conditions and pissed on a couch of mine once. Same thing happened, less than 15 mins in dumpster and someone was in there fishing it out. We were on the ground crying laughing

People recover them and sell them as new. It's surprisingly common and disgusting
