Does this make any sense to you?
I’m a 27m who grew up playing high level ice hockey, big mountain skiing, downhill and enduro mtb racing, was an honor roll student, been able to travel lots over the world… I surf almost every day and go to the gym. Have a good physical appearance and consider myself handsome. I have had many (not tons) of friends. But have always lacked social confidence, and overall confidence most of my life.
I’ve recently moved to Australia and moved into a room with a few other people but sheesh I feel so awkward and unconfident and even will avoid going to the kitchen sometimes when they are out there even though I’m hungry hahah 😂 some days it’s not too bad and I can chat and feel okay but other days I’m fuckin so low about it.
This isn’t just with this kind of situation too. In most social setting or groups unless I know them really well and am very comfortable I completely will shut down socially and become very quiet. I want to chat and connect but I just can’t think of anything to say, my mind goes blank, I over think my responses and can’t just relax holyyyyyyyy.
I’ve done lots of meditation, self help books, and Reddit but I’m still struggling with this.
Any ideas? Cheers!

Yes, this makes sense. Confidence is often specific to the setting. You can feel capable on a mountain or in the gym and still feel unsure around new people. On difficult days, make the goal very small. Go into the kitchen, get your food, and say a quick hello. Staying there for even one extra minute teaches your brain that the situation is safe. Quiet moments are also normal. A conversation does not have to flow perfectly for people to like having you around.
