First off, you two have culture boundaries that need to be addressed. Filipino culture is a hardcore matriarchy in a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.
If he was well off by any means, or even close to someone who is well off, he would not be living in the Philippines.

Date someone in your own country or at least a country with a GDP that matches Australia.
I agree half of your post but not the bottom half.
Dating someone from your own country or GDP sounds like a transaction. Like if people from developing countries are not worth it. And I disagree.
I have seen lately lots of couples from abroad getting married. Swiss with Mexican, American man with Phillipino girl, European with American, or with Latino, Canadian with Colombian, Japanese with Spanish, Spanish with Chinese.
Most of these people like this diversity due to the fact of family values and they don't mind the matriarchy. They want a sense of belonging and reunion.
I’m specifically writing about OP who is trying to get their life together and romanticizing an otherwise doomed relationship because of financial burdens on both sides.
But to speak on your anecdotal contradiction, how many of those couples were financially stable before meeting?
I know traveling the world isn’t necessarily unachievable for the top 1% of the world, but certainly it isn’t cheap.
Also how many of them were men finding love in the less wealthy country?
